Fairfax County Begins to Dumb Down Gifted (GT) Program to Support Diversity

Our DD is in the AAP program and we love the diversity in her class. I haven't seen any indication that diversity has dumbed down the program. If anything, some kids just learn differently than others, but I'm not seeing race as a factor in this. Our DD is caucasian and I would guess she's middle of the pack. There are brilliant kids of all backgrounds in her class; she's learned so much from being with this peer group. I'm glad she's in a diverse environment, which will go a long way toward helping her keep an open mind. Perhaps you could open your mind a bit more too, OP.

news flash, OP: it's no longer GT. it's now AAP. believe or not, it's a world of difference, and you as a parent is responsible for understanding it.

do NOT send your child to AAP to expect GT-isque education. you're failing your child if you do.

I am not sure how to word this one. I am half white half chinese and my wife is white.

What should I put down for my kid's racial background to assist in getting into the program? Can I say other and will that help?

Can you "circle all that apply", or something like that?

Uou'll need to attach a personal statement complete with birth certificates as corroborating evidence. Hopefully no one was born in Hawaii, because I hear the long form takes forever to get.

That's right. It's no longer Gifted and Talented, because some people might confuse it with being Gifted in making pies, or gardening, or sewing. It is Advanced Academics because it is focused on Academic work instead of culinary arts, or piano, or basketball.

I think all the kids in Lake Wobegon would be strong contenders for the program.

What does the T stand for?

Is this a trick question? There are 2 Ts in "Gifted and Talented." I always took it to stand for Talented. But you must be asking about something else.

PP If everyone deserves to be treated equally, then admissions to AAP and TJ should be solely based upon test scores. There should be no social engineering to admit students based up a desire to achieve certain racial equality in the classroom.

I think the ethics questions on the essays tripped up some who just prepped for math and verbal. Ethics are important too.

100% on the mark! Any child not admitted who has scores above those "engineered" into the program has been discriminated against. I am also not clear on the Young Scholars Program. My first grade Caucasian DS could use some extra help preparing for the entrance exams, etc. How is it acceptable for Fairfax County to deny him the ability to participate in this program? How would it fly if they engineered a similar program that was for white children only and applied the same rules in denying admission to others? Classic reverse discrimination here.

My 1st grade Caucasian DD is in a Young Scholars class now, but she is not getting "some extra help preparing for the entrance exams, etc." She's doing things like reading, writing, and arithmetic. Shockingly it's very similar to the work her older (also Caucasian) brother did when he was in a Young Scholars class two years ago. He didn't get "some extra help preparing for the entrance exams, etc." either.

I don't support affirmative action in elementary school AAP programs.

Establish good standards, be color blind, stick to it.
