Schools and Education General Discussion
| at least OP does not have to worry about "tacky hair accessories!" |
why is everyone so down on corn. It is a fabulous and comfortable material. Especially when treated ethically and with the utmost of etiquette. |
| My son usually wears khaki shorts and a polo type shirt on the first day so I can take a few photos of him. After that, he wears athletic shorts and t-shirts mostly. |
Is he your first? |
FWIW, my Mom had 5 kids, and we all have pics from our first day of K. Then, not too many pics until high school graduation. She recently gave me my pics from K in anticipation of my son starting this week. It was actually kind of touching because she is not prone to sentimental gestures. OP, I am going with the "tacky" shorts and polo look. |
| OP, it's great that you want your son to look cute and polished on his first day. Ours wore plaid shorts, a white polo and a vest on his first day. Sure, he looked preppy -- who cares? Most of the other boys were dressed up, too, and pretty much every girl was in a dress. Regular days he wears a polo and shorts, or a t-shirt and shorts. |
| Vineyard Vines nantucket red shorts and a polo. Cute cute cute! |
| Why would anyone get snarky about a parent wanting their kindergartner to look cute on the first day of school? |
OP here. I was wondering the same thing. Obviously- they have their own issues. Might be doing Lacoste shirt, pants and rain boots. Now forecast is 67 and heavy rain. |

b/c it's such an inane request How hard is it to decide on an outfit for a 5 yo boy? Eventually, he'll get dirt, jelly, paint, and/or glue on his shirt and pants. |
| And, if you are as helicopter-y about everything else as you are about his outfit, you really need to concern yourself with logistics. They have to go to the bathroom in K all by themselves. And I know that all you helicopter moms will say, "my boy has been going to the bathroom completely independently since the age of 2 years 4 months and 3 days, but you really need to be honest with yourselves. Teachers can't help with unbuttoning or unzipping pants. They aren't going to be helping with wiping or buttoning or zipping pants either. They will also not help with hand washing. The hand sanitizer that you were all asked to contribute in your school supply packet...buy the biggest bottle you can find and send it in since it is for the whole class and the teacher will make liberal use of it if it is there. Plan your kid's outfit according to there honest practical abilities. |

| My kids are older but I take a picture of them on the steps every year on the first day. I hope they will humor me through high school. I keep all the pictures together (electronically)..so I can watch them grow up. The early years they were fairly polished. Collared shirt (son)/dress (daughter). It faded mid-way through elementary school. I never argued that they had to be dressed up if they wanted casual. If your LO is not complaining why not pull out the polo shirt..it is a very special day. Have fun! |
Give me a fucking break. My Son has been at full day preschool for 3 years. He's totally indePendent buttoning and zipping and can even tie his shoelaces. I am fully aware of the sanitized and the other bs. I have tons of friends with kids that recently went thru K even with same teacher and classroom. Fwiw- DS has never had a single nighttime or daytime since we put him in underweR at 2 years 3 months. U can stop patting yourself on the back for being oh so practical. |
