Ironic thing is that all those pins are made in China. So wearing it actually proclaims your support of Chinese economy ![]() |
Maybe cuz there are a lot of NYC transplants in DC now .... it changes the culture & pace a little. When I first moved here 14 years ago, it was pretty slow going. I was suprised at the lack of (real estate) development, good restaurants, etc. |
may be...but I've seen plenty of posters that appear to be DC natives...that have absolutely no tact when answering innocent questions. They were attacking the NY poster looking for somewhere to shop. I like this board, but these rude people make DC look bad. If JS can answer "ridiculous" questions with tact and intelligence, why can't everyone else? |
I am the OP of this comment. The irony is that it is being taken differently than how I meant it. Which is kind of sweet. I am just not used to a community in which the flag pin issue would not be recognized at this point as the right wing propaganda that it is. It is, after all, very old news - and was never even really news to begin with. However, it appears that the OP was sincere in the pursuit of actual information rather than just trying to fan the flames of deception. So carry on. I apologize for my initial snarkiness. |
Because JS is signed in and everyone else is Anonymous |
This is a crazy question. I don't wear one! I don't wear any "jewelry". I don't fly a flag on my porch. The last I checked, neither do most Americans. |
In October, Obama said he had stopped wearing an American flag lapel pin because it has become a substitute for "true patriotism" since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. In an interview, he said, ""The truth is that right after 9/11 I had a pin. Shortly after 9/11, particularly because as we're talking about the Iraq war, that became a substitute for I think true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security. I decided I won't wear that pin on my chest. Instead, I'm going to try to tell the American people what I believe will make this country great, and hopefully that will be a testament to my patriotism."
He has now taken to wearing one again at times, often depending on his audience. The reason he cited is that he has been approached by veterans who ask him to wear the pin, and who gave him flag pins. |
Yes, but politics is about image, particularly when running for such a high office as the presidency. |
I don't think there is much to say after 15:17 on the flag pin question itself. However, in light of the hostility that arose, I would like to call attention to the question I asked earlier about the tendency of political campaigns to discourage civil discussion.
Perhaps I got no takers because it's such an obvious fact of life that nobody has much to say about it. RH |
bull shit. He is not patriotic. I pray to God he does not win the pres. race. How scary would that be to have a non-american win the top position in our country. I would rather some uneducated farmer that LOVES his country, would die for his country, win that race. He may call himself an american but not in my eyes. He does not love American. I wonder if will celebrate the 4th? |
You are an idiot. Who are you judge who is patriotic or not? Obama represents the American dream -- a country in which anyone can do anything if they work hard enough. Bush and McCain represent torture, warrantless searches, arrest without charge, and unprovoked attacks on other countries -- all the stuff that we were taught that Communist countries do. So, who is more of an American? |
pins are tacky. |
I am less concerned about the pin and would really base my vote on his choice for briefs or boxers. I think it speaks a lot to his character.
(That was sarcasm..for those who didn't catch that) The reason the OP got flamed is because they were really dense enough to contemplate such a fucking ridiculous question like it has merit. It is a news talking point....but fails (like so many other points) to actually be news. |
Some of the high feelings in this discussion underscores for me the partial hazards of electronic communication. I suppose the question poster "Just wanted the layout" of the issue, on the chance there might have been a *specific reason (event) for a certain politician's choice to wear or not wear a lapel pin. It "should be no big crime" for someone - even someone who supports Obama - to wonder if Obama had given the reason (and one replying person connect this up). |

I wonder if will celebrate the 4th? One poster either believes Obama is not American, or the poster is pretending he believes this, or doesn't know what he thinks, or maybe it is a typo. Will the original poster like to correct the claim and remedy his image? AD |
