Real Estate
| That stinks 9:54. So many people are in that situation. All you can do is try to ride it out. Are you still able to make your payments, or has your income changed? Where did you buy? |
| Downtown, early 2005, $500K, now probably $550K. |
| Paid 600k last summer. We've done a lot of work, mostly much-needed cosmetic stuff, and could probably get 650k. County appraisal this year was 675k. |
Ditto but just outside Potomac. |
| We bought in Silver Spring 20910 in 2000 for $325. Our house is worth about $750 now. |
| Bought in NW DC for $220k in 1998, selling next month for $840k. Staying in the area, though, so will need that chunk of change for the new place. |

Ugh, so jealous of all of you who were in the area and able to buy 10-12 years ago. We've been here 7 years and we feel lucky that we didn't buy a condo or small townhouse for a starter home in 2005-6 like so many of our friends. But we're house hunting now and prices are still high with the added fear that they will decrease or stagnate after we buy. At least we'll get a low interest rate . . .
Certainly can't look at a house as an investment right now. Just trying to find something that we can afford the monthly payments on that's in a neighborhood we like. |
I'm worried about this too and in a similar position. I'm thinking about buying now, but I have a feeling prices are going to stay the same for the next two years or so. What do others think? |
| We bought in Silver Spring (South Four Corners) in late 2008. Paid a little less than $450k. I think it's worth about the same now. We'd like to sell but don't think we have 6% worth of appreciation to cover realtors' commissions. |
PP why do you want to sell? Is it because you think the housing market isnt going anywhere or for another reason? Also, have you thought about doing a for sale by owner? |
Because we'd like to move to another city. I sold a house once FSBO, but that was in the little college town where I lived when I was in law school. In our current neighborhood, there are a couple of realtors that have such a stranglehold on the market that I think it'd be a mistake to try FSBO. |
| Bought January 2011, 442k. Smaller houses in neighborhood are selling (quickly) for 375k - 400 so while I don't think we've gained value we aren't at a loss, yet. |
| Bought in 1999 in outer MoCo for under $200. House is probably worth around $400 now, but I'm not interested in selling because our mortgage is so low. |

Bought in 1997 in Chevy Chase, DC for just over $300K.
Put a ton of work into it over the years and lots of upgrades. Put an addition on in 2005 that cost us about $650K. Now worth about $1.1, although it seems like prices may have fallen a bit over the spring selling season after being flat or very slightly up for awhile. At the heighth of the craze, with the right buyer, we might have gotten close to $1.5, which is how I am convinced the contractor priced our addition. We could have sold it without the addition at the top for about $775K. Even though we bought WAY before the bubble, I feel like we still have part of the bubble in our house. |

Bought in 1998 for $330k. Sold in 2010 for $765k.
Bought in 2010 for $880k. Probably still about the same. |
