DC Public and Public Charter Schools

Don't get mad...I was just agreeing with you. If you are going to "re-think" your spot because of a decision made by the admin....and you clearly don't know all of the details behind the decision....then maybe it's not the best fit for you.
It was not my intention to upset you. I am sure we all want the best for the new school! Smooches! |

Please... let's all try to be adult, and civil.
That being said, I'm the person who spoke with the school administration about the status of the waitlist since there was supposed to be a cut off last week. There has been a hold up in calling people off of the waitlist due to the principal being out of town. I don't know the reasoning behind this. I'm willing to be patient and give them the benefit of the doubt, HOWEVER, |
|
Cont'd...
HOWEVER, it does raise some caution flags. I think one of the previous posters concerns were absolutely valid. I thought the same thing, but I also understand that it's a start up charter and there are going to be some serious bumps on this road. Inspired Teaching looks great on paper. If any charter can succed it should be this one. However, potential means nothing if you can't execute. |
| We are the ones that were #1 on WL. We received an email last night offering us a spot. I am excited about the opportunity and I agree, if any school is going to succeed, it should/will be this one. Good luck to the others! |
| To PP--Congrats! This is the OP. I'm still waiting. Perhaps I will hear something today. I'd like to wrap this up before summer break. |
Calm down and remember that there's not an office and administrative assistants being paid to manage administrative tasks right now. If school were in session and you weren't getting a response that would be one thing, but it isn't yet. You are going to really high maintenance at this rate.

Yes, there is no office or administrative assistant. HOWEVER, in the last month I have called 3-4 times and send about that many emails with NO RESPONSE at all. (I finally was able to get through by having them put me on hold for about 10 minutes) I understand they may be overwhelmed at this point, so I can live with a slow response...But NO RESPONSE????
Because it's a start up, they had to have anticipated a high volume of inquiries from both parents of children accepted and those considering the school. Right now there doesn't seem to be a system in place for managing that. The PPs concerns--although perhaps punctuated with excitement-- were not invalid. I am not prone to hysteria and I discussed these same concerns with my husband last night. |
| On this board, prospective parents have had similar complaints about LAMB, and current LAMB parents have come on and stated that yes, the LAMB admin is not ideal. This is one example of many where a charter school does not meet the service requirements that one might expect. My kid's charter has had similar start up issues. If you want a "well oiled machine" a start up charter is not the place, and probably DCPS will also fail your standards. If you can't afford private, get ready for quite a bit of slow-response, apparently incomptent (not really, just other priorities, like hiring, staffing, buying books, etc.), not an up to date website, etc. etc. etc. Start-up charters do a lot with "shoe strings and chewing gum." |
|
Indeed. Startups, be they jewelry businesses or charter schools are going to have administrative bumps in the road in the first few years, or even 10 years as shown by the LAMB example. If this makes you crazy, really think about giving up your slot. I am not attacking the school, but I think there have been a lot of expectations raised about this school and Mundo Verde, and it bears repeating: a good curriculum and enthusiastic parents will only take you so far. The real problem the first few years will be the administration of the school, and administrators will be overwhelmed with simple things like "who do I call when the toilets overflow?" Please be understanding if they don't call you back right away, and if you can't be, find a well-established school where you will be more comfortable.
And, in the end, it's about your CHILD and how they feel at the school. If your CHILD is happy there, then maybe the fact that you don't know about a family night until the night of is OK, right? |
|
No drama here. I understand first hand about trying to get any business off the ground. A start up charter is not for everyone and I wrestle with the right and wrong of taking my child out of their current school and rolling the dice on this new one.
But every educator I've spoken with has had nothing but high praise for the Center. So I guess I'll just have to buckle up for the ride because I would hate for my child to miss out on what promises to be a great learning experience. |
Agree I have a friend that is a DCPS administrator and he has nothing but great things about the Center. |
| Does anyone know where they are on the PK waitlist? My daughter's original number was 19. |
|
No, but you can try calling Tony at the office. He's been working on the list this week.
On that note, did anyone else receive a call off the waitlist? |
| 17:08 here. I have tried calling; as other posters have mentioned, I'm getting nowhere with that. Clearly, they're swamped. So, I'm asking all of you! |
| To 17:08--The only way I was able to get through was when they told me Tony was on the phone, I asked to be put on hold. It took a while (speaker phone helps), but I did get through. I tried emailing but I haven't received a response by email since early May. |
