first lady and "dr." jill biden

As a PhD myself, I feel weird when people address me as Dr. (with the exception of undergrad students), but Dr. or Prof. *is* a standard title for those with a doctorate. It is not, however, the standard title for JDs. Sorry.

I was just talking with a man this weekend who has a PhD in medieval history and a JD. He said the JD was easy because it was (direct quotes here) "mostly a bunch of busywork and rote memorization" while getting the PhD he had to "actually think."

Of course, he couldn't get a job with the PhD- hence the JD after- but it did sound like it was more of an education.

OP here. No, it's more the fact that we have the first African-American first lady - Ivy League educated lawyer who has attained the doctorate level in her field. Yes, we should be especially proud b/c of the fact she is AA and a woman. So, sorry if my complaint seems like snobbery to some, but it simply seems oddly discordant and needy for an woman like Biden (who hasn't had to overcome the prejudices and obstacles that Mrs. Obama has) to insist on the snobbery of the term Dr. when so many other PhDs forego that title. Hey, just my opinion - having different opinions is what America is all about too.

oops, typo: meant "a woman"

You're turning THIS into a racial issue? Wow. Um, OK.

Her having to overcome obstacles does not change the fact that Michelle does not carry the title Dr. Period. Jill Biden is a phd, so she is Dr. Biden. Why can't we be proud of both of these women for their accomplishments? Heck, I don't even LIKE either of them but I still dig that one is an ivy league lawyer and the other is a phd.

Also, I personally take offense that you're pulling the race card on this one. Michelle gets tons of positive press, let Jill get a little.

Clearly, not all opinions are well-reasoned ones.

Sorry, OP. Lawyers don't get addressed as doctor, professors do. Pretty simple and race has nothing to do with it. I would laugh if anyone referred to my DH as Dr. X, despite his Ivy League education, but am in grad school (at a state school) and refer to several of my professors as Dr. So and So. It is the default for those that didn't say to call them by their first names.

10:29 here, just to clarify-DH is a lawyer.

Just because she is white Biden didn't have any obstacles? Seriously? He husband almost died because a brain aneurysm, she raised 2 boys who just lost their mother and sister - aren't those obstacles?

Jill Biden does not have a PhD, she has an EdD.

I am enough of an intellectual snob to care about the difference, in the sense that I think it takes more intellectual firepower to get a PhD. On the other hand, I don't think what degree you have is indicative of your worth as a human being, just a reflection of your professional trajectory.

I have no kind of D at all.

Why do you care? Do you think Michelle gave a sh$t?

10:35 here. I was asking OP not 10:34.

10:31, don't give in! This is what op wants!

again - such arrogant, condscending views toward educators on DCUM . . .

The woman works with struggling adults.

I work with high school teachers who have doctorates and deserve being addressed as such.

I wonder how many of you - dime-a-dozen lawyers aside - have doctorates?
