Got charged $24 for a coctail last night!

You were at a sushi restaurant where they *didn't* know how to make this drink--sounds like they found you to be a tremendous pain so they charged an outrageous price. Next time, go with saki.

Also, just a couple other things that might help w/ your forays in the world of specialty restaurants:

Not a good idea to order mahi mahi tacos at second rate mexican restaurants.

Do not order seafood on Mondays/Tuesdays in general b/c the fish is often left over from the weekend.

"Specials" that include lots of different meats/ cheese in italian restaurants are often leftovers.

Anyone else care to add?

You should start a thread. These are useful.

OP here, and I'm not an alcohol connoisseur but I know enough to know that a proper margarita isn't a silly nonsense drink, and if you think so, you've never had a real one. Here's a hint: if you're at Chevy's and get it in a giant "margarita" glass, that ain't it. It's a classic drink that has been nearly bastardized to death.

A SGM is a take on a proper margarita and requires 2 oz. premium tequila (this is stressed and Patron [is that right? I'm not going to google for this] is mentioned), a splash of triple sec, and the juice of 4 lime wedges, on the rocks, garnished with a lime wedge. That's basically almost pure booze and you will indeed taste if you are drinking crap.

This sushi restaurant had a giant bar that people frequent just to drink, so I assumed they could figure it out. Live and learn I guess.

This! What a waste.

This is why you use Patron or another high end tequila:

Anonymous wrote:And I was in the burbs! At a sushi restaurant! I wanted to try a Skinny Girl Margarita. I've had the stuff out of the bottle and loved it, and thought the real deal would be even better. There was a little language barrier with my server, so I basically gave him the recipe. He said a shot of Petron was $12, and said the thought the cocktail would be too expensive. I said, oh that's fine, I'm just getting one...I expected it to MAYBE be $15 and thought that was way too much, but chalked it up to it being a sushi restaurant.

When he brought it had 4 lime wedges on the rim, and he asked if I wanted it like that or squeezed in and shaken! I said, squeezed in and shaken please. He brought it back and I said, so what's the damage? $24! I couldn't help but say WHAT?! My friend just smirked and said, he warned you! She was right. I deserved it for being so annoying I guess. It was realllly strong. I had to order more lime to make it drinkable. We went to a bar next door for cocktail number 2, and I explained the situation to the bartender and he made me the same thing, for $10. Weird, right? I wonder what happened. The only think I can think is that they put in 2 shots of Petron instead of 2 oz?

It's Patron, and that's what you get for mixing a call brand into a well drink.

Unless it's a Tex-Mex restaurant to begin with, don't order the chili. It is leftovers.

Never order the "frozen Margarita" from the slushy-type machine, not every restaurant cleans those reliably (and the ingredient quality is awful).

Oh, and if you have to tell them how to make the cocktail? Don't order it.

OMG who orders a marg in a shushi lace in the first place?

LOL only in DC!!!!!

OP Patron is always about $12 per shot and they put two in36 your drink. That's why they charged you the $24. I don't like Margarita's, but what you got sounds pretty good.

HAHA. OP, I'm not an "alcohol connoisseur" either, but I am a regular connoisseur, and I really think it's gross to eat Japanese food with Mexican alcohol.

There are plenty of Japanese drinks that compliment sushi well. I share the incredulity of PPs who wonder why you're copping a 'tude about your taste, when you ordered an off-menu drink that's not even remotely related to the cuisine that the restaurant specialized in.

You sound like the very paragon of the suburban dullard to me. I'd rip you off, too.

Why would anyone order a margarita in a sushi restaurant? Also, triple sec ruins a good margarita. Cointreau and or grand marnier should be used instead. If you need something a tad less expensive, use citronage. A good margarita is necessarily expensive. Order something else if you can't afford it.

Y'all need some sedatives. All of you. Or maybe just a few margaritas. Skinny-girl or otherwise.

Says the suburbanite that used her thesaurus just before she posted to make sure she was using "paragon" appropriately.

Skinny girl margaritas. Sigh. Taking the fun out of even drinking? Only in the suburbs.
