Stink Bug Forecast: Biblical

We've had a bunch this winter. We had a ton in the summer/fall. My hypothesis was that the ones we had in the summer laid eggs and the babies are now hatching. Lovely!

No, I hate them and I hate all bugs, but there are many that are worse. The stink bugs dive bomb, which is kind of gross, but when they land on you, they don't feel all oogy, like when a little spider crawls up your arm. THAT is oogy. Also, I'll take them over mosquitos any day. If only they ate mosquitos.

Plus, stink bugs are pretty slow, so if they are inside the house, you can get a vacuum and suck them up. Unlike crickets, which hop in whatever freaky direction they feel like, looking all freaky.

So, in conclusion, while not a friend of stink bugs, I can honestly say that I don't hate them as much as I hate other bugs and bug-like creatures.

Me too. Shame no one has actually offered me the option.

OP, if this is what it takes to make weatherizing your home more appealing, I say score one for the stinkbugs! Bugs weren't a factor, but replacing my windows was the best improvement I made in my 100-year-old house.

What can we do to protect ourselves and our families?

I killed one yesterday with a paper towel squeezed against the wall. I then flushed the sucker but did not smell anything. What does it smell like?

It sucks to think I might have to keep my windows closed all spring and summer... but I would rather do that than deal with an invasion of stink bugs, even though my cats seem to find them pretty quickly.

Was wondering the same thing. I even tried to smell the squished bug and did not notice any strong scent.

I was the one that said that I only swatted one and it stunk all night. It's not a smell like any other. It's a very "musky," protruding kind of stink. Since I touched it, the smell got on my fingers too. I guess they release it as a defense mechanism.

Here is some helpful info.

I think they smell a bit like cilantro, but a bit "off" from that so it's not pleasantly herb-like. My dog won't go near them, so their smell/taste does seem to preserve them, but I don't find that if one is stepped on that it stinks up the room or anything.

Good time to recaulk your storm windows. Seriously.

We have perfected the grab (with a kleenex) and flush technique. Thank goodness for low-flow toilets, I don't feel bad about using the water AT ALL!

They smell like feet, in my opinion.

Agree with the grab and quickly flush technique. There is nothing worse then turning on the light in a dark room and there's one crawling around. ICK! I was talking to my pest control guy and he said to look on plants for bunches of eggs that look like bunches of little grapes and if you see them, knock them off the tree because each egg has like 100 stink bugs in it. UGH!

I get them in my OFFICE on the 7th floor of a large office tower in Tysons. The place is pretty well sealed and the windows don't even open. The guy 3 offices down from me has a few houseplants in his office but other than that no greenery anywhere. Where the hell are they coming from???

Saw one in my car today and thought WTF? Now I know they are starting to infest us...
