Beef, pork, chicken and turkey. I grew up with meat lovers but since I was in my 20s (now mid 40s), I gave it up. The reason? Because of the conditions and horrors that face factory farm animals everyday. Cows and pigs are very much like a cat or dog - they have feelings, form friendships and feel pain. I wouldn't eat my dog or cat, so I can't eat beef or pork.

I won't eat veal, because it makes me sad.
Pork, because it's disgusting. Oh, and any type of gravy ick, I'm just repulsed by it. |

I don't eat pork, and I eat very little meat - I will eat grass fed beef occasionally but we rarely eat meat.
I don't eat very much sea food much anymore even though I love it. I just don't trust the industry. Don't like fast food, but occasionally will grab Subway or Potbelly's (but very rarely). Rarely eat fried foods. I'll eat a good french fry once in a while. I think for me there is not much I WON'T eat, more a lot of things I will only eat rarely. |

Seafood because I'm allergic. Dairy because I'm lactose-intolerant (and at the moment, because my baby is sensitive to it). These are the only two I would refuse in someone's house (although I appreciate not being served the other things that my friends know I avoid).
Soy because it exacerbates my thyroid disease. Farmed fish because of the chemical contamination and the disruption of the natural diet (many are now fed corn). Some ocean fish because of the toxins and overfishing. CAFO beef, pork and chicken because of the living conditions. Veal because of the living conditions. Goats and lambs because they're cute. Commercial liver because of the toxins. This is all stuff I avoid eating out as well as in my house, although I usually pick the commercial chicken when eating out. In my house I buy organic except for a few products that my husband eats (breakfast cereal and pretzels). We buy fair-trade certified sugar, coffee, tea, and cocoa. We also generally don't buy produce out of season (this is aided by belonging to CSAs year round and canning summer produce for the winter). Like I said, the first two are the only things I would refuse as a guest (maybe also veal). You wouldn't know any of the other things about me unless you were a close enough friend to have spent sufficient time at my house to see what's in the cupboard and fridge. I eat the way I eat because of things that are important to me, and have been doing so for 15+ years now (back when you had to actually be a member of a coop to shop at one). It's kind of funny to me that nowadays people are accused of seeking status for choosing organic rather than a dirty hippie. Like I said, |
| Wow, you are good 17:25. I mean that sincerely. I need to a bit more conscientious when selecting food. Thanks for the reminder. |
| Raw onions and raw garlic. They overwhelm the flavor of everything else, they give you horrible breath, and then the smell comes out your pores. All you raw onion lovers-- you stink. I mean that literally. |
| Okay peeps, so you don't eat X,Y, and Z foods for whatever reason. You've made your choices and that's to be respected. But please tell us that you don't sanctimoniously go on ad nauseum about it to other people. 'Cause that would just be annoying. |
Why yes, how did you know that I enjoy telling anyone and everyone who will listen why I don't eat certain foods? I don't recall meeting you. But sometimes I'm so wrapped up in my preaching that I forget names. And faces. And just about everything else... Hmm... maybe time for some meat.

I pretty much avoid all conventional fruits and veggies, all non-pastured or non-wild meats, and anything artificial (diet ANYTHING, sweeteners, artificially created trans fats, added msg, etc).
I do this by eating in season and local when possible, and mixing in a healthy dose of good frozen produce. I cook everything from scratch. DH and I are not well-off by DCUM standards and we probably only spend about $60-70/week on whole foods from Whole Foods (and skip the middle aisles, except the pasta and jars of tomatoes!). Y'all will probably hate me for this one, but I'm a super-adventerous eater and DH is foreign, so I have eaten lots of animals in other countries that would make some people sad. I grew up on a rural farm, though (a family one, not an agribusiness) and I have the attitude that some animals just eat other animals (and humans are another animal), and it doesn't have to be a big sad thing, if the animal had a good life and was eaten respectfully. Just my personal philosophy, not trying to be preachy

Seriously? Your diet is exclusively fruit? That's interesting. I will not eat red onions (digestive issues short of an allergy). I also HATE lima beans (texture), but like all other beans, which is weird since lima beans aren't so different in texture from kidney beans. Just enough to be gross to me I guess. Won't eat mushrooms that look like mushrooms. Freaks me out. And I won't order chicken dishes in restaurants (except things like chicken strips). I'm always worried there's going to be a gross bit on there. I probably seem like a vegetarian when I eat out because most meat dishes that aren't prepared by me freak me out a bit. |

I can't think of anything I won't eat. There are certainly things I like more than others. But I'm not picky.
And I have no problem with people who don't meat. More for me! |

Artificial sweetners because I am allergic to them.
I also will not eat veal. I do eat meat, however, my husband says that I "am one poorly chosen tour or documentary away from being a vegatarian." |

Like PP I don't eat babies, and can't eat pork due to a HS AP bio class in which I had to disect a fetal pig. I cried to the teacher, headmaster, but still was forced to do it or get an F - ugh. almost 20 yrs later and I am not over it.
Also pretty much stick to chicken and beef, though can't do anything on the bone. |
Can we get a general shopping list and/or some examples of the meals you make? Thanks. |
| watercress, yuck! |
