We are so bathed in wireless signals, not to mention just the wiring of our houses and the presence of cell phones.

Do these towers really add to the problem that significantly?

Bethesda has local control. They have 2 members on the Board of Education. They don't have any cell towers at their public schools.

What is the set back on the Sligo location? Cell towers are to have a 1:1 set back so that if they fall over they do not fall on a neighboring property.

A 130 foot cell tower is to be 130 feet from the property line. But there is no requirement of how close it can be to a school building, so it can be placed so that if it were to fall it would fall on the school building.

That's not local control - it's influence. It's worth something, for sure, but it is not local control, in the way that independent towns have local control.

There is a PTSA meeting on Tuesday, March 8th in the media center at Sligo at 7pm. T-Mobile will be there.

And it is important to put pressure on Sligo's principal Rhodes and school Superintendent Weast. Here is the process for approval:

The principal and PTA have to give it the OK, plans are drawn up and reviewed by a division of the Department of Park and Planning, the company has to get a special exception for zoning, and the superintendant makes the final decision, Wilson said.

At Whitman Principal Goodman withdrew his support for the tower and that put an end to it.

In addition there is a petition for a special exemption due to the tower being too close to the neighboring park land. These are usually rubber stamped. No one in our government cares about the kids.
