Stupid Panda Fans, so arrogant.

There is a very interesting book called Ethics on the Ark that discusses the role of zoos and ethical issues surrounding treatment of animals in zoos.

And what about humans being forced to live in the cages we arbitrarily call "homes" and "houses"? That is just absolutely unnatural.

You will stay in those cages bitches and you will like it.

Seriously though, the elephant thing deeply disturbs me. I wish they always had company, like 5 - 8 elephants together. Even this would be a tiny herd compared to their natural habitat. It's just painful and cruel how these long-lived animals from complex matriarchal societies are kept alone. Same with the damn apes. It just kills me.

[get your hands off me, you] damned "dirty apes".

I watch pandas like a Grand Vizier, myself.

My bar is low, but it is absolute. Apes and elephants and most marine mammals shouldn't be in captivity. Ever. The rest, heck, they're just happy for three square meals a day and no predators. I mean really, do we think the naked mole rats are pining for the plains of Africa? Doubtful. But I can't even set foot in the ape house, it's so cruel and horrible to keep creatures of that intelligence penned up like that.

As for the elephants... I overheard a zoo volunteer telling someone that they now have space for up to TWELVE elephants. The hell you do! You don't even have space for the three that are already there! It's just marginally less cruel now than it was before.

And Vizier! Why are there no slave girls and eunuchs to fan our bodies as we watch the pandas?

Agree. The zoo are beautiful fun places for our human pleasure only. We are really no different than depraved sultans or craven dictators, our faces, shiny with popcorn grease, gaping stupidly at the horrible gray bottoms of the sad pandas. We exclaim loudly about their terrible animal smells and wonder idiotically if we could pet them and be their "friends".

sad panda is sad.

It looks very interesting. I will look inside and [gasp] perhaps, read.

Pandas have a huge natural habitat. At one point they covered around 15-20% of China. Today most of them live in the mountains, so I don't think pandas mind the cold.

Covered it like a rug? 15% of China was plush comfort underfoot?

I am sorry I missed those days.

During the cultural revolution days, everywhere you stepped, it was upon a sad panda pelt.

Even at the dry cleaners, Sad Panda was king.

NP here - I bet you pet dolphins on vacation too.

You are so wrong. I was giving a reason why there are zoos and aquariums. Without doubt it is a terrible fate for those animals in captivity but if you don't educate people who have the money, influence and power to protect and preserve wildlife habits and species, often the same people who cause much of the destruction, well they will all be gone sooner than they are indirectly disappearing from pollution and overpopulation now.

OK, for those of us who should have expired with the dinosaurs, how the &*^% do you enlarge these tiny comments? I promise I'll attempt to post some cute image (note the attempt!) if you answer me.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming (except half of you probably don't even remember that! *smacks head*).
