Would you fly on the space shuttle if your wife had just been shot in the head?

Probably a moot point, since they screen pretty heavily for mental preparedness, don't they? I can't imagine NASA would encourage/allow him to go with something like this weighing on his mind.

But I would say yes- it's his life's work.

They are her step kids so I assume their mother is in the picture somewhere.

It's not about being into your career, it's about loving your spouse enough to let them pursue their dreams.

Really? Is that what you tell yourself? If they have children (which they do) and don't know her general prognosis by the time needed to prepare for the flight, then that would be putting career over family. Too much risk, and I say that as someone with several family members who are Navy pilots.

You are selfish.

Nope. Thinking of the children if something happened to him.

The children would have their mother. Giffords is their stepmother.

Your lifetime risk of dying in a car accident is about 2%. So I hope if anything happens to your spouse, you'd never drive again. Because otherwise, clearly, you'd be more into your car than your family.

Driving is a necessity of everyday living for many. Flying on the Space Shuttle is not.

I hope he goes, I'm sure his wife would want him to.

I'm hoping that she recovers and will be able to speak and walk after this terrible injury. Somehow, a trip into space just doesn't seem as important in comparison.

Is it just me or does anyone else think the husband and the assassin look like identical twins? When I saw the hubby at the rally in Tucson the other night hugging Michelle Obama my first thought was Omigod, why are they bringing the killer to the rally?

Other than the fact that the police shaved the accused killer's head and her husband has little hair, they look nothing alike.

How would it help his wife?

They do not have children. He has children from a previous marriage. He lives near/with them in Houston and he and Giffords have a commuter marriage.

Also, the mission isn't until April.

I think he should definitely do it, especially if she continues to improve. Recovering from brain injury takes years -- he can't stop working for that entire time.

This sounds really high. Are you sure?
