Would you fly on the space shuttle if your wife had just been shot in the head?

This is the question. Congresswoman Gifford's husband is a NASA astronaut and he is due to fly this year (April).
I am done with the go getter life, so to me it is a bad idea.
Stats: 2 fatal shuttle accidents and about 110 flights (~2% risk).

Wow at you, OP. I am disgusted.

how is that disgusting? I think the answer is YES. This is the last shuttle mission and a huge honor he has worked for his entire life.

Now if they had young kids, I would probably answer no given the high risks. Just like a widower with young kids shouldnt be piloting small planes ...

If I were the commander of the space shuttle on its last mission ever, yes, I would probably fly on the space shuttle unless my wife/husband were in danger of dying before I came back.

Would his wife want him to do it? That is the question he should be asking himself.

I would go.

They do have two kids, I assume young since they've been married for less than 4 years. (PP here and it doesn't change my answer, though.)

I just said to my husband that she'll probably be talking by the weekend and she'll adamantly tell him to GO! I know I would.

Why so touchy?

This is difficult for me to answer as the scenario specifically as described just doesn't come up that often. Now, no shows at a three year old's birthday party, that I can answer.

Would anyone's answer change if your husband had just been shot in the head?

Very interesting question PP!

If I was the congresswoman, I would tell my husband to definitely go.

If I was an astronaut and my husband a congressman who had been shot in the head? No, I would not go, unless he was certainly healthy and there was no risk of prolonged damage. Yes, a double standard, but I also freak out when my kid has a cough and take him to the ped way more than necessary. It's just a mom's life.

It's hard to believe that some of you are saying yes, if they have young kids. You don't even know yet if she'll be okay long-term. That's taking a huge risk. Clearly, some of you are really into careers over family.

They are her step kids so I assume their mother is in the picture somewhere.

It's not about being into your career, it's about loving your spouse enough to let them pursue their dreams.

He is not leaving tomorrow - he is scheduled to leave in April. They will know a lot more over the course of the coming weeks and months and I am sure they will make the appropriate decision.

The Edwards decided to let John run for Office knowing Elizabeth had been detected with terminal cancer. Would the story have ended differently if they decided not to?
