I am in Herndon, Virginia, and I do/have done all the things you mentioned! |

Well, you can find crunchiness anywhere, but in terms of sheer density of crunchiness? PPs are right, Takoma Park.
I'm in Arlington, and Arlington is probably the crunchiest place in northern VA, but we've got nothing on Takoma Park. Namaste. |
Well, darn it, now I can't move there - if I do, I'll have to park my converted 1981 Delorean (with optional Flux Capacitor) outside of town. Bummer. |

Glover Park. Lots of everything you mentioned, plus they keep toys, broken strollers, and old old Howard Dean signs on their front porches.
|
| Takoma Park and portions of Silver Spring (near downtown). |
| In addition to TP (hands down the crunchiest) - People's Republic of Alexandria (Old Town) and, perhaps, Garrett Park, MD a bit. |
Glover Park? Really? I live there. It's filled with Southerners and people who voted for McCain (incl myself). We're faaaaar from crunchy. |

This, plus old-town Frederick, Md. (if you bought before it was discovered as "cute" 10 yrs ago.) Also, a lot of Baltimore is what I'd call scrappy and/or crunchy. I'd definitely check there if you're willing to MARC it in for a job in downtown DC. |
| Mt. Rainier. We are the poor man's Takoma Park. And a single mama sanctuary. I love it here. |
| There's definitely some crunch in my Del Ray neighborhood. Not all crunch, but crunch-friendly. |
| North Arlington. |
| I have mixed feelings about Arlington -- in some ways, definitely yes, but have you been to Clarendon?! |

Baltimore. I know, I know, that's not what you asked, but it's true. We used to live in Adams Morgan and I only knew one other woman who used cloth diapers. Now that we're in Baltimore it seems like everybody uses them. And I know a ton of people who have had home births. Just way crunchier than DC.
But, if you are asking specifically about DC, then I think Tacoma Park is probably your best bet. Don't know much about Mt. Rainier. |

I'm in Glover Park, too, and I wouldn't describe it as crunchy, but I don't know too many republicans here. The PP might well be the only one, aside from a few republican-type group houses.
I also find it funny that PP thinks GP is full of Southerners. Far as I can tell, most people lean progressive, and some of us are the fabled "east coast Jewish cosmopolitan elite"--including me! Must be a case, for both of us, of like seeking like. |
