Hispanics, why do we hate each other?

Why don’t you speak Spanish? No pride in your country or culture? I’m Hispanic as well and learned Spanish. I have never been bullied by any other Latino. And I find the first thing other Latinos do is speak to me in Spanish. It’s a common bond. So you not knowing any Spanish sets you apart. Also, you sound elitist, like you have so much more. My family has doctors and lawyers and I went to a T10 university and have never felt anything close to what you mention.

I had a good friend growing up whose mother never taught her Spanish she thought it would help her fit in and assimilate by just speaking English. My friend was a filmmaker and one of her film school films was about being caught between two worlds feeling like she didn't fit in either world. In retrospect her mom should have taught her Spanish but she was a young single mom doing her best at the time.

This x100
OP, you may be the common denominator

Not my experience at all. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Never seen this hatred. On the contrary, I see a lot of bonding over cultural commonalities, of which there are plenty even while there also are big national and regional differences.

So you are asserting that anyone with ancestors from central or south america, even if they were born and raised in the US, HAS to learn Spanish or...what?

I’m saying embrace your culture. Why not learn Spanish? What exactly are the downsides?

Imagine that you moved to Japan and were now listed on all official forms as “American” and expected to think (and vote) in line with all other Americans in the country.

lol. I think every American would check that box. I’d also check a North American box even though I think Mexico has less in common with Canada and the US.

Prime example of what OP was talking about

I am not Hispanic but my kid goes to a strange school which brings together wealthy whites abs Asians but also busses in some poor Hispanic kids from a pretty compact area of a neighboring town. The issue is widespread bullying of Hispanic kids who aren’t from that small neighborhood/care about school/have SN/come from more educated families. Their bullies don’t mess with white or Asian kids. They target the kids who look the same as them. It’s bad enough that I’ve met several Hispanic kids who transferred to another HS because of bullying.

Not the person you are replying to but I am third generation Mexicana. My grandfather came here as a young boy (i suspect without documents but no one ever confirmed this). He and his siblings lived in fear of speaking their native language outside of the home. This is why he did not teach any of his children or grandchildren.
I work with immigrant families now. Under our unfortunate administration, this fear is renewed for many. People of color are being targeted and harassed if it even looks like they speak Spanish. Maybe think about that before being so condescending.

This sorta thinking is everywhere. Caste systems. Skin pigment/color system. Fat versus non fat culture. Working clas versus not working class. Highly educated versus not educated.
