| Wheaton has an MIT this year, plus Cornell, a couple Penn, a couple Princeton, Yale, and Columbia. |
| Seemed like fewer UMD admits for magnet students this year, it used to be unusual for strong magnet students to get denied. CAP had a large class this year and did very well. |
This is commitment school? I personally know much more T30 acceptance from this grade. |
Many of the kids might not have unlimited resources. I would think they got a full ride at UMd and most likely will go to grad school so why pay for undergrad? |
Yes, this are the commitments and list was pulled from Blair's Silver Quest magazine that was given to magnet seniors few days back. Not sure if it only a print or if it is also online. |
|
It's also very possible that these same admit lists will still happen once the countywide magnet programs become region magnet models - just the admits will be spread out to other schools around the county.
It's a very impressive list of college admits as always for Blair and to a slightly lesser extent, RM. For sure, the admit lists from Blair and RM will not be as impressive once the region model is installed... but the admit lists at all of the region magnet schools will likely improve. |
I doubt that will happen but we will see... It is not only the kids, but the entire environment including great teachers (most with many years of experience), curriculum (most classes are very advanced and require specialized teachers), clubs (like the FTC team that is very hard to replicate due to high annual budget, mentors, and know how). |
Looking at Naviance it’s pretty clear that strong magnet students don’t get denied. |
He left in January |
I have no idea if that list is accurate but it presumably reflects where students end up not where they were admitted. For example i know if at least one kid who was admitted to MIT and turned it down. (To go to UMD, FWIW) |
2026 is a large class overall. People need to stop assume that the college commitment list are equivalent to acceptance or quality of program. College is very expand competitive now. There is also a trend of kids choosing a more “fun” school after all the pressure and work during HS. |
The list doesn’t tell you anything about UMD admits. It tells you who accepted their place there. |
Yes my statement about fewer UMD admits was actually based on having a senior at Blair. |
|
The number of students that accepted to be listed in the magazine are about 60 out of ~100. My kid ('26) knows at least 3 more accepted at UMD and not in the magazine.
He never heard about a colleague being accepted at MIT and going to UMD (that person might very well exist). |
We'd probably choose UMD over MIT because of the cost and wanting to pay for grad school. Not everyone can pay $100K a year. |
