Dead Fridge... and broke

Anonymous
I'd buy two dorm fridges off FB marketplace or ask for them on Buy Nothing to hold me over until I found a used full sized fridge I could afford.

Look on craigslist or just buy a mini one until you can afford one.

Looking for a store that does 'Rent to own' or something simliar where I can pay in payments. I went to home depot and best buy but they want me to apply for their credit card for financing. I don't want to do that. I'm just looking for credit for a fridge. Long story short,

I bought my current fridge a few years ago and unfortnately I'm out of the warranty window and the cost to repair is about 1k. Any advice on what store does fianancing without applying for a credit card would be awesome. I'm in the springfield/lorton area.

There is a used/open box appliance store on Backlick down near the highway.

People give away dorm fridges this time of year.

Ask the appliances company like Bray and Scarff if they know of someone who is renovating a kitchen and would want to give away a fridge. In the meanwhile, college dorms may be dumping out mini refrigerator.

I have a perfectly new fridge that I hate and we will be getting rid of it when we get our kitchen renovated in a couple years. Same for my dishwasher and exhaust.

Also check Habitat for Humanity ReStores.

This. Why would you be looking for a new fridge? You can rent a truck from Home Depot for $25

Or I would fix it myself. This is even easier for you since you know what's broken on it. We watch youtube videos and fix just about everything ourselves. Parts on amazon and ebay are like $5. Currently fixing our dryer belt.

I wish I could. It's the compressor that is broken and I'm not the most 'handy' person when it comes to fixing things.

My 16 year old fridge suffered the same problem. A replacement was going to cost over 2K plus delivery fees plus tips to deliver and trot out the old fridge.
Replacing the compressor cost almost 1K and would not add to the landfill.

While I was having the compressor replaced, the repairman gave me some tips - there were years where the LG compressors were bad. Samsung compressors were no good. This is circa 2021.

Don't buy an expensive fridge next time.

The simple model I have now is 22 years old. It has had about $400 of repairs. It hasn't been perfect but it cools food.

I could buy the same model again for $700-ish. Finishes are a little junkier but it's the same design.

Seconding Community Forklift. It can be tricky to find exact sizes or certain colors. However, if you just need a fridge to keep food safely cool for a while, it's an option.

Definitely look at Buy Nothing and Take My Shit groups on Facebook. If you post an ISO, you might be surprised that someone else has a delivery of a new appliance set up in the coming days or weeks. They might also be about to begin a renovation and planning to replace appliances. The only challenge there is that you'll have to figure out a way to pick up and transport the fridge yourself.

Costco has some great deals. While you will pay a membership fee, often the discount makes it worth it. I'm seeing some simple fridge/freezer combos for $350 to $700. If you are able to open a new credit card, often there is an interest-free period.

This. You might get lucky with someone renovating their kitchen.

Shhh. The folks buying the less reliable and more complicated models are the ones who are keeping the economy going. Let us keep the secret of buying simple, reliable, lower cost appliances to ourselves.

In addition to what others have recommended, you could also check out one of those appliance stores that sells dented/scratched appliances for cheaper than new.

Another option is using a pay over time option on your credit card. I realize this isn’t ideal, but often the monthly fee is cheaper than the credit card APR.
