Tenleytown "The Hobo" Duane presence outside CVS

Anonymous
I didn't know he has a problem with the dogs too. Never fails, he always says "you're a racist". To me, at me? Maybe to himself? He doesn't yell just mutters under his breath so only I can hear. All the people jumping on OP I invite you to go over there and experience this "pleasant" interaction.

Drugs are one hell of a drug

Seems like a lot of sock puppeting here.

If not, maybe ya'll are racists. I'm a white middle-aged lady and have only had pleasant interactions with him as I said upthread.

Also, if he's muttering under his breath, you must be awfully close to him.

An unhoused older man, Duane, who refers to himself as "the hobo," sits outside the CVS on Wisconsin in Tenleytown. He has a reputation for cursing at women (calling them MF'ers and racists) and yelling at dog owners. He also intentionally scatters chicken bones throughout a wide radius of his sitting his area with the clear intent to hurt dogs. I've been on the receiving end of his rants. He threatened to kill my "MF'ing dog" when we were walking by (at least 8ft. away from him and heading north on the sidewalk, not towards the parking lot) and calls me a "racist b" every time I walk by him. I live in the area and as much as I want to change my pharmacy and grocery store routine, this is the most convenient. After looking online, it appears that these behaviors have been ongoing for YEARS. Has anyone ever tried to call law enforcement after being harassed? It just seems wild to let behavior like this continue when women and dog owners are regularly impacted by him.

Why is your dog part of your pharmacy and grocery routine? Is it a service dog? Pets, however cute and lovable, don’t belong in a pharmacy or grocery store. If your dog isn’t a service animal, I think you, your dog, other shoppers, and Duane will all be better off if you leave him at home.

If he is on CVS property then CVS can take steps to get him trespassed. This happened when some drug dealers set up a tent behind the Eastern Market CVS.

No, they cannot. When there was a family panhandling and harassing people outside of the CVS in Spring Valley, they tried to have them removed, even calling the police several times, and were told there was nothing to be done. No way CVS can have Duane or anybody else removed from the sidewalk or driveway outside their store.

I too have been called names and yelled at by him. I used to be on good terms with him even bought him coffees and bagels etc until one day he decided I didn't say hello to him quickly enough and then started calling me names.
I was a frequent gym goer when Northwest sport and health was there so I passed him almost daily.
He also urinates and probably defecates in public over by the dumpster which is disgusting.
Luckily my gym moved so I don't go there very often anymore.

I have walked by there a lot as a middle aged white woman and has had no interactions with him, pleasant or otherwise. He just sits there - he may or may not mutter things but I don’t listen closely and don’t care one way or another.

I am not a bleeding heart nor a big fan of DC’s coddling approach to homeless, some of them high and or severely mentally ill, taking over the sidewalks but if a homeless person is not blocking access to a business or a public area nor is credibly threatening someone with assault, there is nothing much the city can do even if DC was bigger on enforcing rules and laws on the books (or even had tougher laws on the books in the first place.) Your choice js either to put up with it or change your routine because he’s not going to be removed from there because he’s mean to your dog.

He's not a drug dealer. He's selling newsletters he writes. If he was such a nuisance, I'm sure the local businesses wouldn't sponsor it, and they do.

Why is your story the one everyone is supposed to believe?

He does rant and yell sometimes. He does pee in the parking lot next to the fenced dumpsters.

It is not racist to say what occurs.

I said if it is CVS property. Sometimes buildings are set back so that part of what appears to be public is private.

Walk somewhere else if it bothers you that much. We aren’t going to sic the police on this guy, as much as you’d love that.

Trying to kill dogs is not a problem?

How do you know he’s trying to kill dogs as opposed to just … eating the chicken and dropping the bones on the ground? He does seem kind of unpleasant but I don’t think he’s doing anything illegal.

He is loitering. Call him in.

Dropping the bones on the ground is littering. Urinating in a public parking lot is indecency or public exposure. Yes, I know, the trash can is too far away. CVS won't let him use the bathroom. Always an excuse.
