$300? GM was paid $25k per year to coach that team. I doubt families only had to pay $300. They also practiced two times a week and the fields were grass and not lit. |
Dang, sounds like you were getting ripped off. I played for a competing team, NCSL Division 1 (IYKYK), and we paid $1,500 for the season plus tournaments. Granted, the money went to the coach vs club so who knows what’s what. |
I remember facing them I think mid 90s. NCSL First Division (they used to have relegation back then) We defeated them 3-1 and they fired their coach. We were called the Bethesda Magic!! |
Pay to play implies that players who can pay, will get a roster spot; and players who cannot, likely will not. I’m saying teams would have taken Abe even if he couldn’t pay. |
Teams take top players now, even if they can’t pay. |
Right; and all the players in the 1998-1999 Braddock road warhawks (why are we talking about this by the way?) would have been taken by pretty much any area team even if the teams were supposed to cost thousands and the players couldn’t pay. Because they were all top tier players. Hence, the team was not “pay to play” in the way the phrase is often used to mean that anyone who can pay for a slot will get a slot somewhere. This team was just full of talented players with zero bench riders whose parents basically paid for them to get a slot on the roster. |
