Are the English Composition Assistants the ones who grade student writing? So if they get cut, that probably means the number of writing assignments in high school English classes will get slashed, right?

They work in the writing centers and help students with writing support. Some of them may also help with grading of papers. I know we have 2 ECAs and each of them co-teach like 1 English class as support in addition to manning the writing center throughout the entirety of the day. I'm sure it's different in each school.

I didn't specifically see middle school athletics on the list but did notice that they are going to eliminate an unspecified amount of ECA Stipends which probably will include middle school coaches and club sponsors

I think this is a scare tactic. I’m also not comfortable giving MCPS a blank check every year when they are so poor at managing that money. Many homeowners cannot afford the property tax increase the county proposed to pay for MCPS’ budget demands. There is plenty of room to cut the budget in ways that don’t hurt students or school staff - but Taylor doesn’t want to make those cuts. I’d like to see the council force him to do that.

I’m guessing you were thinking of retiring or leaving anyway so the cuts won’t affect you personally

Council cannot force anything and the only thing they can give is a blank check. That's how it works legally. If you have a problem with how money is spent, take it up with the Board of Ed.

County Council *can't* dictate how MCPS spends its money. And the Board of Ed *won't* dictate how MCPS spends its money. So I expect Taylor will make exactly the cuts he says he plans to.

I agree. As a staff member, I have seen plenty of waste. No one asks us how to make cuts or do help utilization of the staff we have. I understand the budget gap is huge but if some of the changes were implemented years ago I think we would be in a different place.

Has anyone heard which middle school positions will be cut/how they will be cut? Is it a class size increase that will be spread across equally, or cuts in specific subjects?

Middle school is the one place where cuts should never happen. Having more than 20 preteens in a single classroom is a powder keg waiting to blow up in a fury of racism, sexism, and aggression.

Yeah, I wonder why they picked middle school for the teacher cuts? Is there something in particular they're looking at for cost savings in middle school? Maybe getting rid of electives?

Getting rid of electives would easily be the dumbest thing they could do. Some kids only go to school because of electives.
