| Did anyone else see Thomas Taylor's video posted to YouTube this morning 5/12? It was available at 7am, but then became private and now gone. It was relating to the budget and possible cuts, etc. I can't find it anymore. |
Can you provide a summary of what he said? |
| He talked about giving the right amount of communication out too much vs too little being a struggle. He said MCPS is in a terrible position with budget and the county council is going to vote on the budget May 21? (I think) and there will be some choices made depending on that. He said communications have been sent to specific employees that sounded like they may lose their positions after the county council vote. He mentioned how a large amt of the budget goes to benefits, etc. He was unhappy that he had to put out this information so close to the end of the school year. I'm trying to think what else... I wanted to go back to review again but it's gone. |
| Sounded like he is expecting a lot of negative impact in regards to the budget vote. |

Not only is he expecting a negative budget vote, he has already made decisions on what is getting cut. So much for BOE input. |
| LOTS of classroom based positions in the first round of cuts - his latest email included a link to a PDF with a list of jobs which will be cut. |
Thank you for reposting! |
Can you summarize? |
Gotta hand it to Taylor, he's playing a politically savvy game. He's using the threat of bloodshed and outrage from MCPS staff to exert more pressure on the council to "find the money" to fund the budget as much as possible, even though he's being diplomatic in acknowledging that the council has a "tough job" and has been dealt a short hand given the fiscal realities of the state and county, so he's not burning bridges there either. With three councilmembers running for County Executive, I think this will work. I imagine the Council will once again dip into reserves to get by another year and leave the structural deficits to be fixed by the next council. |

I refuse to watch the video. I’m a staff member who also got a second message personally letting me know my position is at risk if he doesn’t get what he wants from the county.
I forwarded that message to the county council with my own message urging them to not give in to these demands. MCPS does not deserve a blank check. Taylor will mis-manage any amount he is given. |

If I am readiing the PDF correctly, it looks like the College and Career Coordinator position will be eliminated. Same with English Composition Assistants
That's a shame because these are very essential services at our high schools. |
Could you share the pdf? |
Are the English Composition Assistants the ones who grade student writing? So if they get cut, that probably means the number of writing assignments in high school English classes will get slashed, right? |
As it is, I barely see writing assignments in secondary school and I certainly don't see them getting any feedback on whatever few writing assignments they get. |
