UVA is more prestigious and cheaper. No brainer. |
yeah, they just separate housing out and then add it back to the next section. it is NOT 63k instate! yikes! Let's Go Hoos! No brainer here. Congrats on having two great options! |
In-state for whichever state one lives in. |
No, tuition is 20K. The “other categories” includes the housing etc . . . |
63??! No. Not even close. |
My kid is a sophomore at UVA and the total COA is around 40K. It is actually more like 35K for us because we don't need the school health insurance. |
Agree (also from NC). |
+ 1 This is the answer. |
Another NC resident here living in close proximity to Chapel Hill (ie. know lots of UNC students, faculty, etc.) - no way UNC would be worth an additional $30K/year over UVA. |
The student may want to go out of state, and the parents can afford it. I'm speaking as a parent whose kid chose UNC over a different in-state university. I agree...not worth it. But we support kid's decision. We have a budget, and cost falls within it. Kid was told that if applying to UVA or Michigan as an OOS student, they needed a very compelling reason to go or don't even apply; i.e. school has a program that can't be done anywhere else. Those two are ~85K+ OOS. I just hope that UNC won't become like UVA & Michigan. Our friends who sent their kids to private school for 6-12 have spent ~700K+ for 2 kids (pre-college) prior to spending 720K+ for 2 for private colleges. To each their own, especially if one is not going into debt! |
Exactly. We just finished our first year and it was $35K for us. Best deal around if you’re in state. |
| If she’s the one at our school who just posted the change from UNC to UVA – congrats! She went with UVA. |
| Premed at UVA is pretty cutthroat, not sure about UNC. If your kid is tippy top, probably doesn't matter, but otherwise, it's a slog. |
+1. UNC OOS is $71,488. UVA in-state is $42,000. Both are excellent. Both have affiliated hospitals go with UVA and bank the difference for med school. |
Why do you think UVA is 63k? It's closer to 40 in state |
