I'm speaking as a parent whose kid chose UNC over a different in-state university. I agree...not worth it. But we support kid's decision. We have a budget, and cost falls within it. Kid was told that if applying to UVA or Michigan as an OOS student, they needed a very compelling reason to go or don't even apply; i.e. school has a program that can't be done anywhere else. Those two are ~85K+ OOS. I just hope that UNC won't become like UVA & Michigan. Our friends who sent their kids to private school for 6-12 have spent ~700K+ for 2 kids (pre-college) prior to spending 720K+ for 2 for private colleges. To each their own, especially if one is not going into debt![/quote]
