Rising 7th grader - AAP - algebra or prealgebra

This can be soul-crushing if pushed too early. Pre-algebra is the way to go.

Math7H is essentially prealgebra, which is what kids who were in AAP/Advanced Math should take if they are not taking A1H in 7th grade.

Teacher here.

Math 7 Honors is Math 8 - they will take the Math 8 SOL at the end of the course. This is the consecutive path for the accelerated math:

Advanced Math 3: Math 3 SOL (Basically Math 3 curriculum with AAP Extensions)
Advanced Math 4: Math 4 SOL (Basically Math 4 curriculum with AAP Extensions)
Advanced Math 5: Math 6 SOL (Math 6 curriculum with AAP Extensions)
Advanced Math 6: Math 7 SOL (Math 7 curriculum with AAP Extensions)
Math 7 Honors: Math 8 SOL (Prealgebra curriculum)

To skip Math 7 Honors/Math 8 is already skipping a whole year of content. That being said many kids can do it because the Advanced Math 6 teachers are used to preparing kids to take Algebra in 7th.

Ask your kid’s teacher. And ask them to be honest. They’ll tell you if your kid can handle it.

Our previous plan was for her to take it in 8th grade, but am worried that the auto enrollment will push more kids to take it in seventh and she will be considered remedial. While she does not struggle in math, it does not come naturally to her. What is your child doing and what is your reasoning?

8th grade Algebra is still going to be the norm. She will be able to take calculus as a senior in HS, which is what most of the top schools are looking for.

The question is does she love math and want to take A1H or is she indifferent or against the idea? If she really wants to because she loves math, then go for it. If she is indifferent or doesn’t want to take the class, then don’t. Don’t put her in it because you are worried how it will look.

Yep. Mine is taking pre algebra honors straight out of AAP 6th grade and she will be fine. She is good at math but loathes it. No reason to push it. FWIW, both her teachers think it's a bad idea to force Algebra I in 7th.

Unless a student is having a hard time with Math 7 while being in 6th grade AAP, any teacher proposing not to do Algebra I in the 7th grade is openly admitting a personal failure to teach the necessary content in the 6th grade of AAP.

I am tired of hearing “I hope they learn it in the seventh grade”, while simultaneously wasting months and months of instructional time failing to teach what students need to know. We supplement, so we are good. But, if teachers cared, they would teach not just cross fingers someone else “down the line” will fill-in those gaps. No, if properly taught, students who took Math 7 in the 6th grade AAP should not need another full year of 7th grade math in order to take Algebra I.

No one is suggesting a kid in Math 6 AAP (aka Math 7) repeat math 7. They are suggesting that some kids need a year of Math 8 (prealgebra) before taking algebra.

Regular (non-A1H) 6th grade AAP math is a mix of math 7/8 (pre algebra). Some kids master it quickly and head to A1H in 7th, and some need a bit more time with the fundamentals so they take 7H in 7th. Nothing wrong with either path but 6th grade AAP math definitely teaches prealgebra.

Taking Algebra in 7th means taking calculus junior year of high school. What math will she take as a senior?

I spoke with my kid's teacher too. She said years ago for her own daughter, she could have taken algebra in 7th but she wanted the daughter to have another year of foundation, there's no rush. She said daughter's friends who took it in 7th were kept very busy and stressed out with it.

Just make sure they take Algebra in 8th grade. That’s it.

Most schools have a post calculus option.

Is this still the case? My 7th grader is in regular Math 7 (not honors) and being pushed into Algebra next year. It appears we are skipping Math 8/pre-algebra for most kids now.

Yes, this is the annoying thing to me. It’s Algebra HN and considered a high school class which will go on the HS transcript. If they want to drop down, they can go back to pre-algebra.

Yes except it's a different class so switching partway through the year will not be straightforward.
