| I have a rising 7th grader and am debating what to do re algebra. Our previous plan was for her to take it in 8th grade, but am worried that the auto enrollment will push more kids to take it in seventh and she will be considered remedial. While she does not struggle in math, it does not come naturally to her. What is your child doing and what is your reasoning? |

How has your child done in math this year? My AAP 6th grader said a decent portion of kids in her class are getting 50-60% on the new county tests. If my child was one of those kids I might be looking at opting out. If it's closer to 75+ % I'd ask the teacher's opinion-- probably ask for a phone call so they can be honest without it being in writing.
It may help to get a combined pre-algebra and algebra workbook and look through it to see what topics are considered each area. |
which new county tests - MAP? Also are these kids doing Alg1 or 7th grade math? |
The county wide unit tests. They're only about 9-11 questions done on the computer. My current 6th grader is not at one of the pilot program schools, so all the kids are doing 7th grade math. |
| Anyone else? |
8th grade Algebra is still going to be the norm. She will be able to take calculus as a senior in HS, which is what most of the top schools are looking for. The question is does she love math and want to take A1H or is she indifferent or against the idea? If she really wants to because she loves math, then go for it. If she is indifferent or doesn’t want to take the class, then don’t. Don’t put her in it because you are worried how it will look. |
This is the answer. Strong marks to whoever wrote it. She will not been seen as behind and setting her up to do well in her math will do more for her-more confidence, better grades, etc |
Thank you. She is indifferent/opposed. We both understand the importance of a strong foundation and don't see the value in rushing. |
Oh my god, this is why I hate AAP parents so much. Your child will not be considered REMEDIAL for taking Algebra in 8th grade. GET A GRIP. You sound insane. I hope you haven't passed this psychosis on to your child. |
NP here...who sounds insane? You sound insane. Sheesh. If you hate AAP parents so much do yourself a favor and get off the AAP forum. Just a thought. |
Yep. Mine is taking pre algebra honors straight out of AAP 6th grade and she will be fine. She is good at math but loathes it. No reason to push it. FWIW, both her teachers think it's a bad idea to force Algebra I in 7th. |
This. Can't help but think this weird acceleration plan is setting alot of kids up for failure in Algebra II. |
Unless a student is having a hard time with Math 7 while being in 6th grade AAP, any teacher proposing not to do Algebra I in the 7th grade is openly admitting a personal failure to teach the necessary content in the 6th grade of AAP. I am tired of hearing “I hope they learn it in the seventh grade”, while simultaneously wasting months and months of instructional time failing to teach what students need to know. We supplement, so we are good. But, if teachers cared, they would teach not just cross fingers someone else “down the line” will fill-in those gaps. No, if properly taught, students who took Math 7 in the 6th grade AAP should not need another full year of 7th grade math in order to take Algebra I. |
| One interesting thing I learned is that there is no non-honors algebra for 7th grade. So if they start HN algebra and need to drop down, there is no where to go. |
No one is suggesting a kid in Math 6 AAP (aka Math 7) repeat math 7. They are suggesting that some kids need a year of Math 8 (prealgebra) before taking algebra. |
