They practice 3 times a week but no one’s head explodes if you miss one or two, and they have tournaments maybe 1-2 times a month but some of them are single day tournaments and they are mostly places we can drive to for the day—eg Baltimore, the St James, Frederick. For us, that’s a better fit than a “national” travel team.

I agree the youth sports generally is lacking in options for kids that have some skill and enjoy playing but don’t want to turn it into a part time job. My son ended up quitting soccer because he couldn’t quite find the right spot for that.

Can you name some of these "regional travel teams" - what you describe sounds ideal!

I think the PP refers to the bottom club teams. Clubs tend to call their top teams "national" or "travel" and their bottom teams "local" or "regional."

That was my best guess, but the PP may clarify if that was not the intent.

Is No Panic not considered 'Regional' category?

Depending on the age level, you have several options with No Panic:

Most clubs that have one team per age group like to pretend that their teams are more competitive than they actually are and get those teams to travel for tournaments. When they add a second team to their offerings, that second team is more of a regional team (this is not valid for Paramount, which has two competitive teams for most age groups). The third team added to the offerings typically a local team that doesn't travel as much as the top two teams.

Going back to the "travel-lite" leagues/clubs for a moment.

The SYA league is/was called the Dave Lacey League. Someone compiled rules for this league and made a comparison to other leagues.

SYA rules: https://docs.google.com/document/d/11jkhIKUUAXnsob7hXpUvZCTwNMfiEFxh41zCDaP_FbE/edit?tab=t.0#heading=h.xbrtw5rvkzsq

VYI rules comparison: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1iqXWNp5HwPP2I4iK7-udiRQ2XQ9_Y-JMAWXfxRWSfOs/edit?tab=t.0

These documents may give some folks a little perspective...or mean absolutely nothing.
