Fun, competitive vball with girls who know how to play....

But it's not club/travel? We're at a crossroads. My daughter loves volleyball and is very, but she also loves so many other things. I think she would miss out if she played travel ball and had to give up other things. Is there anything in this area that's competitive but not travel? I think I know the answer, but I felt like I should ask.

Where do you live?

Check out one of these travel leagues. “Travel” is all playing against other select teams in northern VA.

Or maybe NVVA would be good?

Thanks! This is just what we need - but the practice gyms are a little far for us. I wish BRYC had a travel league.

There is a 6 week coed league that meets at TSJ on Friday evenings. My DD joined it this year a couple of sessions because she didn’t do club this year. It was better than nothing and she had fun. It runs all year. She’s not currently in it and is trying a different spring sport at her school.

She might do it again next year or is thinking about going back to club, at a lower commitment level team. She will decide in the fall.

Your sense on this is mostly accurate. The players who are skilled at volleyball are the ones who train a lot and those are the ones playing club. There isn’t a universe of highly skilled players hiding in a rec league somewhere who haven’t been pulled into the dark side.

What age?

I think there are middle school "travel-lite" leagues/teams run at Vienna Youth (VYI), SYA, SYC, South County (SCCA), Dulles Youth (DYS), but I don't know if any of those organizations claim to be close to Fairfax or Annandale. Not sure about older or younger ages either.

SYC is close to Annandale but kind of a mess.

I have not been able to confirm if this NOVA travel league still actually exists.

OP here - it does. It's SYA (the host team), McLean Rec, Vienna Youth, SYC...maybe some others. I don't think it will work for us because SYC is a mess and the others are too far for practice.

My daughter is in high school and she and most of her HS teammates are on regional travel teams. They practice 3 times a week but no one’s head explodes if you miss one or two, and they have tournaments maybe 1-2 times a month but some of them are single day tournaments and they are mostly places we can drive to for the day—eg Baltimore, the St James, Frederick. For us, that’s a better fit than a “national” travel team.

I agree the youth sports generally is lacking in options for kids that have some skill and enjoy playing but don’t want to turn it into a part time job. My son ended up quitting soccer because he couldn’t quite find the right spot for that.

Nice! So McLean rec feeds into this league? Anyone have a link to watch for when this all starts?
