My daughter is in high school and she and most of her HS teammates are on regional travel teams. They practice 3 times a week but no one’s head explodes if you miss one or two, and they have tournaments maybe 1-2 times a month but some of them are single day tournaments and they are mostly places we can drive to for the day—eg Baltimore, the St James, Frederick. For us, that’s a better fit than a “national” travel team. I agree the youth sports generally is lacking in options for kids that have some skill and enjoy playing but don’t want to turn it into a part time job. My son ended up quitting soccer because he couldn’t quite find the right spot for that.
Can you name some of these "regional travel teams" - what you describe sounds ideal!
I think the PP refers to the bottom club teams. Clubs tend to call their top teams "national" or "travel" and their bottom teams "local" or "regional."
Interesting...which clubs have local or regional teams?
Most clubs that have one team per age group like to pretend that their teams are more competitive than they actually are and get those teams to travel for tournaments. When they add a second team to their offerings, that second team is more of a regional team (this is not valid for Paramount, which has two competitive teams for most age groups). The third team added to the offerings typically a local team that doesn't travel as much as the top two teams.
