| Also make sure that his lunch has healthy fats and a lot of fiber. |

Some of this will depend on what sport and what position the kid plays. But in general, you want the meal/snack before practice to be high carb including some simple carbs, moderate protein and fat, and lower fiber. That's different from what is considered healthy at other times.
So people suggesting lower sugar chocolate milk are missing the point. The reason why it's chocolate milk and not white milk is because the sugar (simple carbs) is important. The reason why it's peanut butter and jelly/honey/banana is that the sugar is important. People suggesting high protein things like chomps or tuna packs, are also off base. |
| We make peanut butter and banana soft tacos. You can wraps them in aluminum foil on the outside with a paper towel on the inside. Peanut butter on the soft taco, sliced banana on top of that, fold into taco. |
WG bread with a no sugar added PB and a small amount of J is just fine. White bread with jif and a buttload of cheap J not fine. |
Doesnt it go brown? |

My daughter would eat this bean mix between school and crew practice.
Black beans, diced tomato, corn, lime juice all mixed together. Then she would bring a snack pack size of tortilla chips and scoop up the mix with the tortilla chips. |
Knock that off - WG bread with as much jif and jelly as needed is fine - this is a teenaged athlete |
PP who wrote this. It was about the Chomps, which is bolded. Those are not good for anyone! It's like bacon or hot dogs. Fine once in a while, but not as a regular snack. My kid could/would eat these every day, so we no longer buy them. |
Maybe after a day or two, but not if you make it in the morning and have it that day. My husband has been making these for himself for probably 30 years |
PP here - I was responding to the post about all natural peanut butter and a dab of low fat jelly! A bunch of posts have been removed |
| Does he see a sports medicine or functional Dr? They should be able to link him up with a nutritionist, if he is a serious and talented athlete as you claim. |
Considering they use antibiotic free meats and use celery salts in lieu of added nitrates/nitrites, it’s not that bad. Sure it’s processed, but considering the options of light weight, non refrigerated, protein snacks that an athlete can keep in their backpack it’s really not that bad, the turkey chomps are far less greasy than the beef. |
I don't care about the fat/grease for a kid. But I don't want to give them a known carcinogen as their regular snack. Once in a while, maybe. |
You can get some delicious natural meat sticks or jerky at farmers markets. More expensive but healthier and really tasty! |
| We do trail mix, apple slices with a small container or squeeze pouch of nut butter, Built Puff Bars or granola bars with nuts, yogurt pouches that don't require refrigeration (like GoGoSqueeze), and hummus with vegetables (this one probably needs a cooler pack). |
