Wow. I pay $800 for the exam, lab work, and vaccines each year.

Then I order the heartworm prevention and flea/tick topical, which sets me back another several hundred dollars. It's definitely well over $1000/year per dog, and I have two dogs.

Our vet is the Fairfax 'burbs is about $250 for our one golden retriever. That's for the check-up, vaccines, whatever random tests are needed. (I order the flea/heartworm pills online.)

It’s usually $1100 for an annual visit. Exam is $120, but bloodwork, vaccines, and flea/tick/heartworm for the year bump it way up.

So $500? And then I get a prescription to take to Costco for the tick prevention meds because those are ungodly expensive for the ones that work best. This is a 3 year old dog, so nothing fancy.

Go ask your vet if they are a partner in their clinic. Most will say they are employees of a larger group. They even buy up vet clinics and say nothing about the clinic changing hands. A despicable practice if you ask me. At one clinic I had been going to for 8 years I only knew because the address on the dogs rx label changed to an office in Boston where the company was headquartered and not the local clinic.

The only downside is getting the appointment slot, which is first come, first served and opens on Tuesday morning for the Thursday of the same week.

They recently opened up a community veterinary clinic in SE, too. MUCH cheaper for annual visits, and even sick visits. Not great for emergencies, though.

Are you doing yearly vaccines? Once an adult you can do them every 3 years or longer if you do a titer and their immune levels are appropriate. Also are you buying their hw and flea meds all at once for the year?

Titers cost more than the vaccines themselves!!! Yes, immunity typically lasts longer than 1 year (3 years if the DHPP or Rabies), but blood testing is expensive.

For those of you complaining about cost of vet medicine, but want little Fluffy cared for with the intelligence and comprehensive diagnostics and treatments, do you realize the paradox?

You want the best care for your pet, yet you are unwilling to pay for what that costs....

If you are okay with no true examination - go to a Doc-in-a-box vaccine clinic and wrap your arms around that fact. It will be cheaper - in more ways than one.

If you want quality care, you need to pay for quality care. Why is that surprising?

More and more, people want their pets to live longer, happier lives....that doesn't happen by accident.

The veterinarians and staff that provide that care deserve to be paid for their time and expertise.
