A spay is a very invasive procedure, but a neuter isn't. I've seen some dogs get their balls removed, but others just have the tube cut (similar to human's vasectomies).

Really? Mine just had it done at 5 years old for the first time to clean off some tartar and do some xrays to get a baseline and it was about 375. Granted, thay was for a clean bill of dental health, would have gone up from there if they had found problems. Vet said probably good to go for another 5 years unless there are obvious issues that crop up. This is a large dog though and I understand small dogs are more prone to dental problems but every year seems like a lot!

Vets do push it annually. I think like with humans, teeth condition is part genetic and varies widely based on diet, care, and other habits. I had a dog live to almost 16, weeks only had his teeth cleaned 3x and he never had significant problems and he never needed any extractions. We didn’t brush his teeth but we did stock to dry food and he was a big chewer which may have helped. His teeth did always looked incredible after the cleanings, though, and his breath was definitely better! I just couldn’t justify the expense at the time.

No, that's the reasonable price available to everyone who doesn't want to pay boutique vet prices. Vets charge out the backside because they can.

Many shelters host spay/neuter drives a couple times a year. You can ask when they are. Some shelters will even offer low/no-cost options just because you asked for the help. Worth a try, at least.

Educate yourself. Neutering is linked to many health and behavioral issues. Spaying less so and does have some health benefits, although there is an increased risk of bone, joint, and ligament issues. If you're a responsible pet owner with a secure yard, you are not a crap person for choosing not to put you dog through an unnecessary procedure. I know someone from Sweden and they were appalled to find out how commonly it is done here. They view it as mutilation when it is not done for valid medical reasons.

There's no such thing as a 100% secure yard, just like there's no such thing as 100% safe sex. Your dog can get out, other animals can get in, and there are entirely too many unwanted pets already.

The sort of person who thinks the way you do is the exact sort of person who should spay/neuter their pet. Clearly you're not smart enough to justify the security and confidence you speak with.

It’s true, other cultures have different views on pet ownership- they ban certain breeds, they are comfortable with unleashed dogs and dog parks, and they don’t believe in crating dogs.
