Luxury accommodations with shared bathrooms .. why?

Anonymous
While my FIL was still living (widowed father of 3 boys) if we were all staying with him at the same time, I had to share the bathroom with 3 men, who once upon a time were those 3 boys. Eventually, one of the brothers married. The two couples shared the "boy's" bathroom, and the younger adult son shared the main bathroom with their dad. It was actually easier before the SIL joined the crew, who wanted to make the rules, having no ability to go with the flow for the few days we would be there together.

Is this with family, as in one room for the kids and one yours and you share, or is this with some random people? Because there is NO way I'm doing this. I don't care how gorgeous the location or hotel is.

Shared with random people. You’ll find this with wilderness lodges that you have to fly or boat into. I’ve found the people who would be annoying or otherwise hog the bathroom self opt out like PP above. It works out pretty well that way.

I stayed once in a dorm style lodging at a high end hotel and it was a shared bathroom but more like a dorm bathroom with multiple toilet stalls, shower stalls and a row of about 4 sinks. One for men and one for women. Very clean. It was fine.

Faraway Nantucket is an example.

At faraway isn’t it just 3 of the rooms in the whole hotel? The only people I know who’ve booked those cheapest rooms are wedding guests where they know the guests in the other rooms

I’ve stayed in hostels when I was young and had no issue with shared bathrooms and if I got a really cheap accommodation would have no problem with a shared bathroom scenario now but there is no way I would pay medium, let alone luxury, prices for that set up. Barring the fairly unique situation (like the remote locations PP described), why would anyone go for that?

This is much preferable to one bathroom shared with a random person.

Depends. One room that you just wait and come back to if it's occupied... could be ok as long as the other person is not an a-hole and inconsiderate. The row of stalls can be more "anonymous" but certainly not private.

The rooms with the shared bathrooms are 100 square feet. So small. Maybe for very young couples

It worked pretty well because it was a ski resort so people were generally getting up and out at the same time so the multiple shower options worked well. As it turned out there were only 3 women sharing the bathroom so it's not like there was a crowd. Most of the time no one else was in there when I was.

In the summer they still change almost $800 a night... hell no!

DH and I had a jack and jill bathroom with a single male friend. It was situated so the toilet and shower were behind an additional door, the jack/jill opened into the sink area. But still, these places are going for like $10k a night and you have to share a bathroom? Anyways, yeah it's a thing.

This is a different scenario though. Air BnB rentals with a group, you're not all getting your own bathroom.

That place looks so old and grandmaish to me. No thank you. I also would not consider $800 a night in a place like Nantucket luxury. I pay more than that in Rehoboth.
