How many hours of sleep does your 9 year old get?

Anonymous
My 10 (almost 11) and 8 (almost 9) year olds have lights out at 8 and wake up at 6:40 for school. (I'd like it to be 7 but can't happen with school schedule). The 10 year old sometimes can't fall asleep until closer to 8:30+ (other days he goes right to sleep). The 8 year old typically falls asleep immediately.

Other than getting a sense of her mood/attitude/energy, one thing I've been told is to look at what time your kid wakes up on the weekends (assuming similar bedtime). If they are sleeping in an hour or two, they are probably overtired during the week. If they typically wake up at a similar time as they do during the week (unprompted), probably okay.

My 9 year old gets about 11 hrs. 10-12hrs is appropriate at that age. Snoozing for an hour is a bad idea. If she waking by alarm clock then she’s not getting the sleep she needs. Going to bed earlier is the only option- and you can’t just decide to go to bed early it takes a long time to build the habit. Shift earlier 10-15 minutes each week until she waking up without an alarm.

You can’t change wake up times but you can change bed times. The only long term solution to better sleep is an earlier bedtime and that takes time to establish. If you notice when kids go to bed late they wake up at the same time.

Newly-10 has a few late nights during the week due to her activities but in general sleeps roughly 9 PM - 7 AM (we wake her for school). Left to her own devices, she'd be a night owl - bed around 10, sleep until 9 or 10 AM.
