WashU's quality of life is definitely better than Emory's. WashU's dorms in what they call "South 40" are luxurious and remind me of Disneyland. The campus is amazingly well-kept. When we visited both campuses, WashU made us feel more welcome than Emory. They arranged for my kid to have lunch with a current student followed by a chat with a campus staff, which Emory didn't (and no one else did, to be fair). For the ranking-obsessed, 20 is a million times smaller than 24, allowing them to say their kids attend a t20. Emory's Oxford campus is also a bit of a head-scratcher, although applicants can certainly indicate they don't want Oxford. Based on these reasons I could see why students prefer WashU over Emory. My kid would, too, if these are the only options.
I dont see how the quality of life in Sl. Louis is better than Atlanta. Emory receives more applicants so it being T25 over T20 doesn't seem to deter them especially when WashU being Top20 is a technicality as its in 4 way tie at 20. Also Emory has better Business and nursing programs, the two most popular majors currently. Nice try though.
