yes it's usually around 11 to 13 years old and 3 to 4" in a year when it happes it;s typically just one big sputt and maybe a couple of smaller ones for 1-2 years after. People typically don't obsess over growth spurts in girls because, broadly speaking, girls aren't penalized for their heights the same way boys are.
BTW growth spurts function the same way for boys, too, though it's generally a little later, 13 to 15. Most children are completely done by 16. Those who grow significantly after thinking 2 inches generally start puberty later. It's not common to have huge growth sports in college despite what popular culture claims. Sidenote here, it's also common to give college athletes that extra quarter of an inch because it looks better on reports / |
extra 1/4 inch - LOL - sometimes as bad as 2-3 inches especially near thresholds for certain positions - see diego pavia listed vs actual measurements at the combine |
very true!

My daughter is 5’0” now. She is 12 years old and in 7th grade. She is one of the shortest girls in the class. She hasn’t yet had her first period but many in her class, if not most, have. |
5' at 12 isn't particularly short (being in 7th just makes it seem more dramatic) |
Yeah, this sounds more like a case where a large growth spurt got massively exaggerated and became family legend that grew every year. I have a 5th grader who is already 5’1” Kids who are 4’9” are pretty short by comparison. In 7th grade a kid who is 4’9” would be in 10th percentile. Jumping growth curves to the 97th percentile in one year is pretty much unheard of. Even 6’5” boys don’t grow 12 inches in one year. |
My 12 year old 7th grader is 5' and just got her period (she's not the shortest kid but probably in the bottom 25%). From what I've read, that means will grow maybe 2 more inches. I'm surprised - I'm 5'2", but my husband is 5'11". I thought she'd be taller. |
Fine, I'll give you data - CDC growth chart for girls 5'0 at 12 is 50% and 5'2 1/2 at 13 is 50%

Mid parental height for the two of you (for a daughter) would be 5’4, +/- 3 inches. Sounds like she’ll be right in the mix. |

I don’t think I ever had a growth spurt (I’m 5’3”) and my daughter definitely has not. She’s very small. Just hit 5 ft at 14.5. Grew an inch this year. Probably about done got period a year ago.
By contrast my son grew 3 inches this year from 11-12. |
That is a really early growth spurt for a boy! He will probably be an early developer/done growing young. |
3 inches in a year is not a growth spurt. Between 2 and 3 is normal. My kids (12 yo boy and 9 yo girl) have grown 2-3 inches every year of their lives to date. |
Totally agree. If there was a magic pill to ensure tall kids, all the parents would get their kids on it. What will be will be. |
PP said it was a growth spurt for him (in contrast to her daughter). 3 inches is a lot pre-puberty (and probably means puberty growth spurt is under way). |
I agree I’m the one who posted my son grew 3 inches. The dr didn’t treat it as a growth spurt. She commented that he was growing at a steady pace. He’s still in the same percentile as last year (75%). He does have friends who have shot up 5-6 inches over the year though. Their voices have started to change too. His has not. |
