Do girls have big growth spurts ?

My dd is barely 11 and tall. She grew 4 in over the last year and is 5 ft now. The only sign of puberty are breast buds that might be starting to develop but overall she seems prepubescent. Do girls have big growth spurts like boys do or should I except this same steady rate of growth until she is done growing.

I'm 5'5" and my growth spurt of 8" was between 11-12. Girls grow before puberty I think.

I grew almost a foot in… 7th grade? 8th grade? I forget which. By the end of that year I was 5’9”, just one inch shy of my eventual full-grown height of 5’10”.

What I remember most about that time is just being SO HUNGRY. Always. I’d eat two huge servings at dinner and polish off a sleeve of Oreos and then 20 mins later be hungry again. I was a total beanpole and just could not get enough calories.

She’s in her puberty growth spurt now. It will last for about a year on a bell curve, then slow down until she stops growing. As PP said, she needs calories and sleep while her body is running a marathon on the inside. At least 10 hours of sleep and 1,300mg of calcium, plus all of the mostly healthy calories she wants (assuming a healthy body weight).

So you were 4'9 in 7th grade and grew a foot in 8th? That seems highly unlikely. Are your parents tall? You must have been under the 10th percentile before the growth spurt.

I think it varies. My own DD was more steady and grew 2-3 inches every year, but grew until age 15. She grew about 9-10 inches between age 11 and 15 I think. Later bloomer puberty wise.

Is 5’0 tall for an 11 yr old ? I reached my adult height around that age but I had my first period right before I turned 11

I have stretch marks on my knees from my growth spurt :'(

Same for mine. She got her period a year ago at 14 and has put on and addition 3 inches since then.

Why do people here obsess over this stuff? Whatever happens, happens. You'll go to hug her one day and realize she grew. Then you'll know.

How does this seem like an obsession to you? Maybe a parent is curious how many kilts or jumpers they will need to buy over the coming years if multiple spurts happen.

I don't remember when my daughter hit 5', but probably by 11 because she was 5'8" between 13 and 14 and never had a crazy spurt, she just always grew several inches per year. She was a head taller than most of her friends through elementary, so yes, I would say 5' at 11 is tall.

It's interesting because her and I are the exact same height, and I wasn't 5' until I was almost 14, but I grew 2" my first year of college.

I was thinking about the amount of stretch marks a kid would get from growing more than 8” in one year.

I was thinking the same thing. I have stretch marks on my hips and thighs after a 3 inch spurt !
