NP You aren’t associated with BSSM but knew a reference to HSA was a parent association? Sharing information before the school communicates builds distrust, don’t you think? |
Doesn’t everyone? |
I’m the person you are responding to and nope, my kid’s school is far from Alexandria but also in northern VA. Zero affiliation but parent association acronyms tend to be similar-ish so it didn’t take a lot of critical thinking to see what it was referring to. I just did a very quick google search to see if this was a state secret or something, and the very first result for me is a Google page that spells out the acronym. And no, I don’t think it builds distrust to share draft information with people who have roles to fulfill on behalf of the school. At my kid’s k-8 parish school, our parent association is responsible for new family events + back to school events for the entire school community. Some of those include outside vendors like caterers, etc. I assume that in order to plan those things they need dates to plan against. I have zero cares in the world if that group knows information about the school before me. |
| Lol I’m so glad OP is back and even more grateful that there are so many posters that remember her. |
NP, not at St Mary’s or any Catholic. No. What does it stand for? Don’t most parent associations have a P in the acronym? PTA, PTO? Wth is the HSA other than my medical reimbursement account? |
Home & School Association |
A sampling of schools with an HSA: Jane de Chantal (Bethesda) Holy Redeemer (Kensington) Blessed Sacrament (DC) and… BSSM (Alexandria) |

OP please please please do yourself and us a favor and move your kid to a different school. You know your criteria: published honor roll, student directory, set first day of school. No need to worry about how math is taught, what sports/arts are offered, size of class, etc.
But seriously - leave the school!! |
Thanks, to you and pp who spelled it out for me. I guess it’s a common term for Catholic schools in particular. All the (non-Catholic) schools I’ve been involved with use some form of parent/teacher association and I’d never heard of HSA except as a health savings account, which I knew wasn’t relevant. 😂 |
Plenty of non-Catholic schools use HSA, rather than PTA. It’s a matter of organization and fund-raising. |
+1 |
You forgot one criterion: mature, open-minded, critical-thinking parents who aren’t pathetic sycophants who bully anyone who dares to question or critique or make suggestions. |
| I'm not sure I've ever seen someone use the word "sycophant" (or "sportsball") more than OP. |
+1. Our public school has an HSA. |
I’m actually really glad that you’re staying at St. Mary’s—you’re helping to preserve the community at my kids’ parochial school. |
