UVA and Farmington Country Club

Membership “by invitation only.”

I know families who can use it through reciprocity from their home club.

It's where George Hugely was all day before he murdered Yardley Love. Says it all.

Jesus Christ. It doesn't say anything at all. If Ted Bundy drove a certain model of car, should that reflect on everyone who happens to drive that model?

And then, one presumes, the kids who meet at the club admit each other to the exclusive student-run business clubs that control access to job interviews.

What a wonderful process.

I’m not a country club person, but uh, yeah. That’s how they generally work. Believe me, your kids aren’t missing out by not being invited to these d-bag gatherings.

Except networking opportunities, job opportunities, and access to high-value dating prospects.

Yep, the Farmington student crowd controls entry into many of the Commerce School clubs (i.e. all the finance clubs). It's frustrating. Not surprising but frustrating.

What? This is utter nonsense.

+1. 300 is not a plausible number. Too high.

I'm a first year parent and there are several clubs that limited their first year positions to this crowd. I know these kids.

High-value dating prospects? Ew, no thank you.

If your kid can’t handle the fact that rich, beautiful people have easier access to networking opportunities and jobs, then the business world might not be for them. UVA might not be for them, either.

Has it always been this way or is this class particularly so?
This all came up during Greek rush because most of the top houses are entirely Farmington member kids.

Wow, your kid knows 300 people in the freshman class?

1. The idea that 300 or even 200 college kids are spending most of their free time at a country club, and that the country club would tolerate this is utterly ridiculous.
2. The class of '29 is about 4000 kids. So why is your kid fixated on less than 8% of the students in this year?

Yeah this is stupid. The clubs memberships aren’t close to big enough for this to real. People create nonsense boogeymen of these clubs that cater primarily to old men. This is coming from a spouse of a husband that belongs to multiple clubs.

There are plenty of NoVa families who can afford that. The question is if it has a long waitlist or people can join after their kid has been accepted. If you live in Mclean, Great Falls, No. Arl, etc, there is a good chance you or a neighbor wouldn't have a problem paying that.

DP. Historically, the NoVa families haven’t really been inner circle at UVA. How very nouveau riche to think you can buy your kid some social cachet by joining Farmington.

They're not this year either. The Farmington crowd is not NOVA kids at all.
