UVA and Farmington Country Club

Anonymous
My kid knows upwards of 300 kids in the freshman class who are members there. The kids spend every waking moment (outside of class and going out at night) at the "club." They eat there, study there, live there during finals week (they have hotel rooms), etc.
Has it always been this way or is this class particularly so?
This all came up during Greek rush because most of the top houses are entirely Farmington member kids.

300 kids? That doesn’t sound plausible. But no doubt there are some.

It's a very large crowd in this class. Quite a few hundred. Hard to tell how many are members or just regular guests of members.

So what is your question?

There are 300 freshmen who are from Chartlottesville or surrounding area who are all members of Farmington? Troll.

EA is going to come out soon and it's time for the regular attempts to get people pissed off at UVA.

Weak.

That seems surprising. When I was at UVA, it was a fancy place that was reserved for things like dinner before formals.

I highly doubt that 300 kids in the freshman class are even members, much less 300 kids that one kid knows.

I heard from a douchey finance bro that I know that families join when their kids are accepted.

I know families who can use it through reciprocity from their home club.

It's where George Hugely was all day before he murdered Yardley Love. Says it all.

Does it allow women?

This is a country club with annual entrance fee of $50k and annual dues around $5-10k. This is not most students or their families.

Judge Smalls, presiding.

When will the EA decision out?

Absolute troll. I’m a member of Farmington. First of all, the kids aren’t members. I’m not even technically a member / ilyymy golfing DH husband is. I don’t even have a membership to pass down to kids - that has to
Be done through the member spouse, male or female.

Second, most likely these are not children but grandchildren of the members. Farmington is dxpensive and its membership
Tends to be older, established or retired, like I am.

Third, the children or grandchildren. Would need to use a members number to
Charge anything. Never, in all
My years of membership, have I ever seen a clump of UVA kids using the facilities. Why would they? It’s for older types and would require or uber from campus. UVA has a great food scene near it. There’s no reason to go to Farm.

Fourth, if children or grandchildren wanted to hold or play tennis, they would have to sign on through management. I’ve never see. A group of UVA students go out together to golf. Why would they? They already have the excellent UVA-owned Boars Jead course across the street.

Fifth - there is ONE study room set aside upstairs for UVA children or grandchildren to study in. The board ok’d this in recent years so grandchildren wouldn’t have to study in public areas or bars while waiting for parents or grandparents. That has worked well.

Six - there are UVA-related members because -gosh! - a number of graduates are members, as are local businessmen and women and faculty. Most UVA faculty that I know are emeritus … because, again… it’s expensive and take time and effort to join.

Seven - Farmington pumps a lot of money into UVA to support its missions and regularly pays for the marching band to play there. I just saw the men’s a cappella group sing at a women’s holiday lunch.

Eight - Farmington helps pay the way for many UVA students by hiring them as staff I’ve found them always to be pleasant and hard-working.
