This is not true. It's the opposite. Most (not all) of them are done growing taller by 16. Boys later to puberty will grow later. There is a lot of talk about someone's brother's cousin who grew 4 more inches in college (and of course ended up 6-5 in the retelling). Not saying these situations don't happen. They do. But they get presented as commonplace. |
+1. Happened freshman year at college, gree two inches. He’s 6,4” now. |
This isn’t true. The average age for boys to stop growing is 16. |
That was my brother, too. He reached full height at 20.5 |
In my family, some of the boys grew until 20/21 and they are generally 6'2 and 6'3. My dh grew an inch after we met at 20 to reach 5'11. I grew 3 inches between 15 and 18, which is unusual for girls, I know. |

Most likely he's done but maybe not. That's all anyone can tell you.
|
more than likely, he didn't have a growth spurt, then stall, then spurt again. Usually when the growth stalls before the growth spurt it means they are about to hit puberty. That happened to my DH. He stalled in MS, then shot up in HS, and then the growth slowed down after 18, and stopped growing around 20/21. Same thing happened to DS. Both are late bloomers (as was I and DD). |
DH is a white Brit and doesn't have much facial hair. He did a 23andme and found that he has more Neanderthal in him than most of the population. We attribute that to his lack of facial hair. He said he could never grow a full beard. He just shaved this morning after having not shaved for like 10 days+, and it was still short. |
| I love how DCUMs semi anonymous nature provides a real time look into stated vs revealed preferences. |
All of this and very often the 6'plus heights are grossly exaggerated and embellished. As for op it's likely he's done growing. He might squeak out another inch . It's unlikely he'll get to 6 feet and he's not going to surpass his dad. Despite what the Internet and social media is telling you most American men are not above 6 ft and plenty of 5ft 8in men are doing just fine in life. |
I get that. Just was surprised that the doctor sounded so definitive. |
You're disappointed your son is shorter than you thought he'd end up and you'd like the doctor to be wrong. I get this. |
Wrong. Most boys are done growing in height by 15. |
|
Highly unlikely. The norm is one huge growth spurt, then they might eke out another inch after the spurt.
When did his feet stop growing? |
| You are 5'3. He's five inches taller than you. That's almost exactly the norm for a son/mothe. |
