Would you send your DC to HYP so that they will find a quant job?

Jane Street is a quant trading hedge fund. It is also a cliché here. Striver DMV soccer moms who otherwise don't know Goldman Sachs from BCG from Citadel reference it to act like they know something about the world of high finance. It is a prestigious firm, but by mentioning it, they are advertising that they know absolutely nothing and are just regurgitating the one name they know.

It is like other posers who show up at cocktail parties acting like experts on wine, watches, cars, golf courses and ski resorts. While some are impressed, those who actually are knowledgeable about these topics can spot their ignorance within 30 seconds.

I know a family with a really super smart and quirky kid who went to Harvard and is now at Jane Street. His dad is actually disappointed that this kid, who really seemed like he would do something interesting and world-changing, decided to follow the herd.

It’s depressing how many very bright TJ alums we know just ended up in finance or quant. Many went to Harvard, too. Strengthening the core curriculum ethics and social sciences might be necessary.

If they care about money they wouldn’t be in government.

So what should they do? How is that unethical or less ethical than other professions? You sound like a brainwashed without critical thinking skills.

You need to rethink who a HYP student is these days. It isn’t preppy John who summers on Nantucket. It’s super smart strivers who test well and want to keep striving, not change the world.

DP but it’s quite the opposite. Power in government can get you very rich. Look at the presidents, senators and congressmen. You’re an idiot if you don’t see this.

Changing the world and scientific research in high school is a fake narrative to get into HYPSM. Students who then proceed to switch to finance and consulting and maybe high paying big tech. It's so obvious. Then they leave their jobs after a few years because they are not management material.

Quant is not the favored profession from the Top Engineering Schools

It actually is but not attainable by most. If you’re from UMD, then of course quant isn’t your top priority because it’s way out of your league.

True. Most are on financial aid too.

It actually isn't.

What are good schools the feed into quant jobs outside of HYPSM?

lol please stop. Quant is not ideal for many. For some, yes, for many, no.

The top 20-30 schools all feed…you have to pass the math and other interview challenges so it’s a bit more meritocratic.

I think everyone is too obsessed with quant vs other non-quant hedge fund positions. Quant is a very small group, while Citadel, Point 72 and other hire many more for portfolio management and other non-quant positions.

For those jobs, the top schools have outsized representation, especially Wharton and Harvard.
