Who are the readers and posters in this NYC subforum?

Now I am a parent, still in NYC, with kids in the school system.

Been very fascinating to reflect on the journey to this point as so much of the stuff on UB made no sense to me as a teenager (but was nonetheless fascinating to read).

I'd be interested to know what topics attracted your attention.

I used to read the WSJ's "Juggle" blog about work-life balance before I had kids, but I was in my 30s. There was an interesting set of online friends (username but anonymous) who shared suggestions and life news in the comments. Anyone here remember that?

PP here. Just the incessant parent talk about TT prestige and insecurity that seemed to abound about life was fascinating. The relationship talk about broken marriages as well was fun to read but made no sense at the time.

I was quite middle class on good financial aid with two parents who both worked 9-5 and made dinner every night so it didn't make sense.

I also didn't find school to be stressful and graduated on to HYP with a smooth glide path. No tutors, pressure from parents, or life path laid out.

Years later now as a high-earning parent some of this makes more sense, and some of it still brings a chuckle because I don't really care about the rat race. But I've come to understand the immense tradeoff in time some high-earning professions demand on parents, and why it leads to stress and consequences.

Yes, because NYC and the DMV are such provincial areas. We must protect one another from foreign thoughts, observations, experiences, and ideas.

This is great advice for Mayor Mamdani. He needs to learn to stay in his lane & let the President handle foreign affairs.

Uh the prisoner was dropped off in his jurisdiction… if he said nothing, you’d complain about that. Where you posting from, toots?

Mamdani needs to stay in his lane; the apprehension, arrest, and prosecution of the defendants is, in this case, a federal matter.

Wonder what Mr. Mamdani & his supporters would say if the President interfered in city matters.

Upper middle class parent with a kid applying to a range of private and catholic high schools in NYC. Amazing how little discussion there is online about many of the private schools. Wish there was a private school equivalent of the FB group "Applying to High School in NYC." Genuinely just trying to find the best fit in terms of rigor, culture, commute, money, etc. for my kid and our family. I've posted some questions on this forum before and received some helpful responses.

40something executive mom of 2 living in Westchester, formerly a childless 20something who read mockery of the original UrbanBaby on Gawker while living in hipster Brooklyn. Originally from MoCo where my parents still live. I attended public schools and now my kids do too.

How is he interfering?

I live and work in NYC and have been here for much of my adult life.

I am fascinated by the education topics since I work in this area and have clients who are high net worth families advising their children.

Moved to NYC from DMV about 10 years ago. Learned about DCUM during time spent at the NIH.

Currently a physician at one of the university hospitals in NYC, so can’t afford private schools and don’t read those threads. Kids are in D2 public schools.

Honestly wish the NYC area still had something like this! Whybemom is a cesspool and seems to be 5 people talking to each other plus some bots. I've gotten rid of Facebook but still get my neighborhood parents' email list. The area used to have so many good neighborhood forums--remember Brooklynian? And Williamsburg alone had a few...

When it comes to things like potty training tips or kid-friendly meals or how to evaluate schools or activities, I think the parents of the DMV are similarly well-educated and ambitious for themselves and their kids, so the same advice usually applies. I'll continue reading this site even though I haven't lived in the DMV in over 20 years now.
