MM 10 miles outside of BC and I don’t have to lock my door.

Crime can happen anywhere. Many years ago when kids were small I went to a botanical garden with them, ex-burb sort of quiet area. I had a big handbag I used as a diaper bag and figured I'd leave it in the car out of sight rather than carry it. Turns out some organized gang had been hitting the parking lot and was watching who left their car without a bag and broke a whole bunch of windows with a baseball bat. So many people got their windows smashed who did not have valuables in it. It stuck with me and I always carry a purse out even if empty and I could just have my phone.

There are people with drug problems looking to steal everywhere. Especially in flyover country …

My brother is a LEO and works in the auto theft division, and he says 9 times out of 10, when a car is stolen, it’s because the owners left the keys in the car. When car parts or items are stolen, it’s because they left it open. And when there is a smash and grab, it’s because they left things sitting in plain view.

I live in flyover country but in a metro area. One of the managers in our group doesn't lock her car doors and neither does her husband. Husband left keys in car. They live in a nice suburb.

He was up in the very early morning in the dark due to indigestion and all of a sudden heard a car start. Watched his SUV drive off. Her (company) car didn't get stolen because there were no keys in it. But the thieves poked around in it.

Because the stolen vehicle had OnStar, and the police were immediately called, the vehicle was tracked within about 30 minutes. And recovered that day.

That was an exciting PSA at a pre-Christmas staff meeting!

Also our town's LA Fitness is a major theft magnet for laptops and wallets (from cars and locker rooms). It's right by a major highway.

You do you, I'll do me. Some people lack common street smarts and will always be vulnerable to crime. It's just not a problem for me.
