I can’t believe this PSA is necessary, but once again there has been a spate of smash and grabs outside a gym in my area prompting a flurry of next door and local FB group posts reminding people not to leave their wallets, phones, etc. in their cars when they workout (duh).
ICYMI: thieves are literally watching people as they exit their cars and walk into the gym. If you don’t have a bag and your hands are empty, they know you’ve left valuables in your car. Make a big show of carrying your things inside with you. And don’t leave valuables in your car. |
| Also, don’t leave your garage door opener in your car. They can smash your window and open your garage. |
| PSA - Don't be an idiot. |
| Even dumber is my BIL who left his car keys in his car parked at his country club one night. Car stolen and never recovered. |
| I also always lock up my stuff at the gym. I used to belong to a small neighborhood gym that seemed pretty safe. One day I was working out there, in the middle of the day, and my wallet was stolen by someone who had come in claiming to want to join. The front desk sent her into the ladies' locker room to check it out. That's not what she was there for. |
| I argue with my DH about this all the time. He pretty much always leaves his wallet in the car. In the storage thing between the seats. He just doesn't like carrying it. He'll put the credit card he wants to use in his pocket and leave the wallet behind. |

I once got upset with my young adult daughter when she said she left her purse and stuff in her car until she basically said she always put it under her other mountain of stuff in there and they could take an hour looking for something of value if they wanted.

Kind of like my strategy of, "if it takes me an hour to find something I'm looking for in the house, then come go fish"
All my drawers are junk drawers. |
Crime evolves I have a big house. For the last month I've had no vehicles parked in my driveway because of things and reasons. In that time I've had two visits from other cars parking in my driveway who seem to get all surprised when I open the front door, claiming to have had "the wrong address" For accuracy, though, all four of my dogs always start barking like crazy when any car pulls up So much better than any burglar alarm |

Sounds like the gym should demand more police presence if their customers are getting robbed.
I have a large purse I bring to work with my laptop in it. I always leave that in my car (when at the gym or picking up from daycare), but bring my keys, wallet and phone with me. |
Right? I read the title of this and thought "who would be so stupid?!" Crime of opportunity right there. |
| Meanwhile, here in flyover country, we don't even lock the car doors. |
I am not going to lie, that was pretty smart of her to pull that off. |
But you have to ... live in flyover country. |
Right. No one should even have to be worried about being robbed. Cops need to be on this. A local playground to me got hit really hard. Moms often leave their purses in their car while they go run around playgrounds with their kids and thieves know it. I rarely have a pocket to put my wallet into. |
