My kids played in CYO, Arlington AAU & now FCYBL. It honestly /sounds like parents forgot to train their kids or use the resources to have their kid some-what developed before entering county travel / AAU basketball season. We played against that younger Annandale team and game was close until a few bad mistakes on our part second half.
Both teams had a lot of mistakes and to hear that team is mostly 4th graders on a 5th grade team is simply astonishing to hear. Parents, let’s not attack Annandale or any other team for being prepared for the season; let’s train our kiddos harder. |
I don't think anyone is attacking a team for being good. They are questioning whether a team that good should be playing in D2 instead of D1. |
|
In previous seasons, 5th grade played pool games in December and they would then sort them into D1/d2/3 based on the results. Older grade teams would be moved up or down over break if needed based on their scores.
This year, they didn't do the pool games (which had always worked great in the past) and they let some coaches register themselves into lower divisions for easy wins which doesn't benefit anyone. Its a new commissioner so maybe he doesn't have the time the old commissioner had to be on top of things, but its a shame since this league was always well run in the past. |
\ This is a weird take. 5th grade is the FCYBL entry year. The vast majority of kids have not played travel basketball before winter 5th grade FCYBL. That's why they are doing no-zone for 5th grade d2 and d3. |
The rec leagues are too watered down. The rules for the kids to be too passive. |
Huh? |
They also don’t force teams up or down. The coaches can decide. So since winning in youth sports is most important, teams who should move up don’t. |
|
Has anyone run into a team from manassas park in 5th grade girls where the parents and coach are just unbelievably nuts? I was shocked that the referee and league allowed this behavior-its mid season so this has clearly been going on all year.
|
Yes- we played them before. # 12 scratches. The coach is nuts. The parents were screaming "take her out". Someone should report them.
|
| There’s always next season. We had many D1 teams in 5th, fewer in 6th and even fewer in 7th. There is movement YOY. Good teams move up, bad teams move down…. |
I know this happens because we’ve also experienced it in youth sports, but I can’t understand how a person could think this behavior is normal?! I get embarrassed FOR them. |
What do you expect from Manassas Park? |
the kids who start AAU earlier are at a huge advantage. My kids are in high school and if I had to do all over again, I wouldn’t do re/house league at all. Group or 1on1 training and AAU. |
Rec leagues have rules preventing kids from playing defense. Some of these kids never saw a press in most cases for example. This fact alone will get a team blown out when they get into travel. |
They are a PW County team. The coach also coaches a boys team- he’s an AAU coach. That’s how I know the guy. In case anyone was wondering it’s all white kids on this team. |
