Thursday, December 11 Board Business Meeting (Note Time Change)

Don't let former BOE member news or a video by the person hired to run the school system distract you this week's BOE meeting and any other meetings concerning your kids and the schools they attend.

In scanning the written testimonies that have been uploaded thus far, the BOE is letting an overwhelming number of people from Fields Road Elementary School dominate. Since the BOE has implemented much more stringent screening of who gets to speak, I wish they would limit people who clearly come from a single group so that we can get a diversity of topics and viewpoints on all of the many issues that are happening within MCPS.

That is exactly what they do not want. Business meetings have been eliminated and public comment has been restricted. Taylor is flooding the zone with unplanned changes and firing up the outside law firms to fight parents in court on every one of his surprises.

Grace Rivera-Oven, our new BOE president, is absent from her first meeting as board president? Not a good look.

That just means the Fields Road people were first to sign up. It's by order of signup, though people are limited to one testimony per month.

No, that's not true. When you sign up now they make you state what you're testifying for and if what you're testifying about is or isn't on the agenda. So they are actively curating those who get slots to speak. It's no longer first come, first serve.

It hasn't been that long of a change actually. I think they implemented this new model last year when Taylor arrived. Before that, it truly was first come, first serve when McKnight and Felder were superintendent.

Wrong

I've testified under all three superintendents. I know what I'm talking about.

Yes but within that it's by the time you get in. I think 10 are reserved for agenda items and 5 for non agenda items. But if you are the first within those 10 or 5, you get in (unless you have testified in the prior month).

Per the website: "The first twenty (20) speakers who sign up for public comments during the designated sign-up process are afforded two (2) minutes to speak. Public testimony slots that remain available following the closing of the sign-up process may be filled on a first-come, first-served basis on the day of the meeting by signing in with Board staff no later than fifteen (15) minutes prior to the scheduled start time of the open session."
