Explain to me why Trump supporters directly hurt by his policies still support him - WVA edition

I agree with so much of what's been said.

The funniest thing to me this week is the Costco boycott because they're suing the Trump admin over tariffs. Do they WANT to pay more at a bulk store? I do understand voting against your financial interests because wealthy Dems do this all the time, but I don't want to pay more for groceries and household staples.

I hadn't heard about the costco boycott.

So... let me get this straight... not only are MAGA ok with paying more due to tariffs, but now they won't go to a warehouse store that offers great deals because the store wants to be able to continue to offer discount prices?

This is another "cut off my entire face to spite my entire body" mentality. Wow. The cult has seriously got a stranglehold on MAGA.

I love costco, btw.

That's correct!

Like what specifically? What does Trump offer them?

An enemy. An excuse for their failures.

If he told them that wiping was woke we’d be surrounded by people with dirty underpants.

That is gross, but sadly, I can see that actually happening. Like when people were taking fish tank cleaners to battle covid because Trump said chloroquine would help. Not sure how much more cultish they can get than killing yourself because you were following a cult leader.

My elderly mom moved to Texas into a "home" near my sister after my stepdad died. She's always been wildly racist, doing stuff like imitating her housekeepers accents and once giving one a giant frozen turkey as a "holiday tip" which turkey had to be carried home on the subway, instead of a cash tip. She was super excited when Bush 2 got elected ("that's what we need in the White House - a real cowboy!") And I'm like, Mom he went to Andover and Yale, he's not a cowboy.

I don't really want to have contact with her at all anymore, especially as she apparently spends time trying to report the different staff members in her home for stealing from her or being "illegals" ... she almost got kicked out for it.

It's definitely a bloodlust to somehow put whites like herself back on top of the pile. She attended Flint MI HS in the 1950s and somehow never got over the idea that she and those like her were wrongly "chased out" of their birthright or something. Like some people shouldn't be allowed to live in some places. She loves Trump.

You hit the nail on the head. It's human nature to avoid admitting a wrong. People have worked hard to convince themselves Trump wasn't a mistake in 2016 to the extent they've voted against their interests by supporting him again in 2020 and 2024. To a much lesser degree of harm, there are still some Dems who refuse to admit Biden was a mistake in 2020. It's basic human nature.

They think/hope Trump is screwing over black and brown people even worse. They’re ok getting hurt as long as people they hate are getting hurt even more.

OP here.. I do agree that Dems who refuse to believe Biden was not all there and should've dropped earlier in the race are delulu.

But, this WVA case is different. This is not just about who is in the WH, but the policies that Trump supports which are hurting people like them the most, per the article. Yet, they still support him. That's just cray cray.

They don’t hear Trump talking shit about them like he talks about non whites so it’s easier for them to convince themselves that Washington in general is at fault but not Trump.

My cousin's MAGA ex husband just asked her for a loan because his girlfriend moved out and he can't afford rent without her. He is a Fox true believer who thinks everyone else is a moocher.

When she suggested he call Social Security and get a top off from her benefits, as she always was the main breadwinner, he said he couldn't because that would mean he got too much for Medicaid and SNAP!

All the privileges of a 70 year old white guy in the South.

Many are willing to have less as long as they’re surrounded by people who look like them. Brown people give them anxiety.

I agree. It's a crazy cray amount of cray cray but this isn't shocking to hear.

The unanswered question is did your cousin give him the money? We know she did not loan it because she is not getting it back if she gave it to him.

That spending $3 billion for freaking climate justice is idiotic.
