Emails like the one posted here never happen until after it blows up and the school half-heartedly says "We're on it". So yeah, DCI does deserve kudos for being straightforward about it, I wish all schools were up front that way. Most are not.

That’s concerning. I’ve not seen any media coverage pick up on the priors. Were they also related to sexual abuse or to child abuse?

DCI probably did one background check when they hired him. School divisions don’t typically check after that. I have been at my current school for 15 years and only had a background check upon hire. I would think serious crimes would be reported though.

Serious crimes are not reported to the employer — at least not in the schools where I’ve worked. My school does do background checks bi-annually after hire. Unfortunately, if a person is just accused but not convicted, it won’t show up on the background check.

There are reports that he was making other students uncomfortable. DCI wasn’t exactly on top of that. Plus this case is horrendous. There is no way DCI could ignore this and hope it goes away. He snuck into her house!!! What a tragedy for that student.

Please link to the source for saying he had priors before being hired at DCI. I'm a DCI parent, have seen a lot of the coverage, and nothing has mentioned him having priors. Please link to it or else you're not credible at all on that. The situation is nasty and horrible enough, no one needs people spreading inflammatory stuff here without linking to sources. Um, there is no question at all about the fact that this is horrific, criminal, and should never ever be swept under the rug or minimized. And so far no one is trying to minimize it. But when you say there are reports of him making other students uncomfortable, what's your source for that? So far the DCI parents I've talked to say their kids didn't know and didn't suspect. Where is it stated that other students had complained to the school about him?

He's a criminal and a pedo and deserves all the full weight of consequences that can be legally applied to this situation. And anyone who has sex with an underage child is committing rape because a minor can't legally consent and also all the other developmental reasons there is an age of consent and laws about statutory rape.

And yes, this is awful for the student more than anyone else. One can only hope she gets good counseling and the school community handles such a public crime in a non-punitive, non-bullying way for her.

Pretty sure whoever said he had priors made it up, because none of the articles so far have mentioned anything about priors. The crime is clear enough and awful enough already, and if the school dropped any balls that will come out. But making stuff up to make the school look worse without a source is messed up.
