You're already all the way in SE Asia, go somewhere else in SE Asia, don't backtrack to Japan (assuming you are coming from the US). It also will be February which is not the time people typically visit Japan.
I reckon this is a case of people just spouting out places they've been themselves or want to go without reading OP's question. OP - where else have you been in the region? I think Thailand or Vietnam is the way to go. |
| Thailand for sure |

Op here- what about a few days in Hong Kong (and maybe a day in Macau) and then to the Phillipines- Palawan? And then I will fly back to the US from Manilla?
Should I try to fit in a day or two to mainland China? I've never been. Note- I'm worried about being exhausted the entire time (I'm terrible with time changes). I've been to HK and Bangkok once, Hanoi once and my travel companion went to Tokyo recently (and is based in HK now). We could go back to those places, of course, but just mentioning it. I'd love to go to Japan |
| Japan is great. I lived in China for several years and if you’re going to go to Mainland China, I would make it a separate trip because there is a lot to see. I’ve been to South Korea multiple times but of the big three, Japan is just wonderful. I don’t have any experience with SE Asian countries so unfortunately, I can’t provide any advice. Wishing you a great trip! |
Thank you! Any recs in Japan? I assume Tokyo is a must even if my travel companion was recently there |
| ^ do you recommend South Korea? Honestly I’d love to have a nom surgical facial treatment while I’m there. Their cosmetics and skin care is amazing |
Kyoto is beautiful! |
Tokyo is fantastic. The first time I was in Japan I did Hiroshima, Kyoto, Tokyo. Next time I'm staying more in the rural areas with some time in Tokyo at the end. I'm sick of cities at this point in my life. They all look the same to me. |

I’ve been to China a few times. It’s a massive country l think there’s probably something for everyone? My favorite was a hike along the Great wall on a day trip from Beijing. I also love Tibet but it’s a big effort to get to.

Japan is really cool but China is amazing. Not sure people get that who haven't been. I've been to most of the Asian countries mentioned as I am Asian and the thing is, China has everything. The govt does not care about you as much as you think it does people who say that have 1. Never been there visiting and 2. Are programmed to believe this watching too many movies I just took my kids there for 4 wks last summer through China and Japan. Loved it.
Hitting southern China offers a lot if beauty and the weather in your favor as summers are unbearable. |
I've been to most east Asian countries. China is by far the worst place I've been over there. It hasn't been amazing at all. |
Thank you!! |
Wait, are you the one who has posted about food poisoning in China? Why do you hate it so much? |
| If it’s a choice between going to Japan in February, which a PP suggests is not optimal, and never going to Japan, the choice is clear. OP, go to Japan!! |
