Who woulda thunk being a boy was an advantage for getting into colleges in the 21st century |
False. SCHEv doesn’t break GPA out by private or OOS. |
| W&M doesn’t have a materials science major but I think your student has a good chance. |
They have bioengineering with a concentration in materials science starting in the fall. It was previously just offered as a minor. I imagine that's what OP meant. |
+1. Also the admit rate is lower for OOS. Why do you think an OOS with sub-mean scores paying full freight is “in”? 18,000 students applied this past cycle. Many of those are full-freight OOS attracted by the $71,080 price tag compared to $94k+++ for other SLACs. Many of those are boys with higher GPAs and test scores. |
| I don’t think it’s a lock, but I think she has a solid shot. Good luck! |
The ACT is above the median when you factor in half the student body didn't even have high enough test scores to submit them. |
For ED or for all acceptances? |
| OP, please report back in after you’ve heard. That helps others in the future. It’s a great school. Good luck! |
W&M is eager to attract OOS students; they recently received a gift designed to facilitate OOS recruitment and grants: https://news.wm.edu/2025/09/24/expanding-william-marys-national-reach/ And W&M is still 2/3 in-state, so those SCHEV numbers are overwhelmingly in-state (and I’m guessing public school HS students). OOS stats are generally going to be higher than in-state, but ED changes a lot—that’s guaranteed OOS tuition for W&M, which they love. I suspect OP’s student gets in. |

Good luck to you! Wanted to add- Virginia state schools no longer look at legacy, so don't worry about that aspect of it.
|
| Any thoughts on when W&M ED I decisions will be released? I see it was 12/12 last year, and it also looks like it was the first Friday in December for a number of previous years. |
|
Per their IG, it was on 12/10 last year so maybe 12/9? I've read some posts indicating it's historically been 12-15 days after Thanksgiving.

OP, please report back with update!
My DS loves W&M is considering ED II from OOS New England boarding school but his GPA is only 3.5-3.6. I'm torn if I should dissuade him from EDII since the average GPA for admitted students is 4.16+. |
Anything is possible. Apply. |
